Fabric vs Quilt: pick Fabric if you want the loader mods and modpacks target, including Fabric API for 26.3. Pick Quilt if you want its readable crash reports and mod sub-folders and accept a loader in beta since April 2022. Quilt runs most Fabric mods, but Fabric cannot run Quilt mods.
This page rests on the Quilt FAQ (edited 3 February 2026), the Quilt and Fabric home pages, and the catalogue pages for Fabric API and two Fabric modpacks, all read on 6 October 2026. We did not install either loader or run any mod on it. For the wider Forge and NeoForge question, see Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge.

What Quilt says it is
Quilt describes itself as a free and open-source modloader and a modding toolchain developed primarily for Minecraft. Its FAQ lists Quilt Loader, Quilt Config and Enigma as the main parts. Its home page says Quilt began as a community fork of Fabric and that the two are now separate projects with different goals.
For players, the FAQ names four advantages: more readable crash reports with a warning when a mod was built for an incompatible loader, loading mods from sub-folders of the mods folder, many configuration and JVM argument options, and compatibility with almost all Fabric mods. The home page also states that Quilt collects no telemetry or analytics.
What Fabric says it is
Fabric presents itself as a mod development toolchain. Fabric Loader is described as a flexible, platform-independent loader, and the core toolchain also lists Yarn, Fabric Loom, Intermediary and Fabric Language Kotlin. Its Play section says the loader alone is the bare minimum and should be combined with Fabric API, placed in the mods folder like any other mod.

Some mods also need a language adapter. Fabric Language Kotlin is a dependency that adds no content and lets mods written in Kotlin run on Fabric.

How Fabric mods run on Quilt
Quilt Loader is built to be compatible with Fabric mods, so a mod made for Fabric is placed in the same mods folder and loaded by Quilt. The FAQ says this works in most cases and points to a published list of Fabric mods that do not. It calls that list a pretty small number, and we have not checked it mod by mod.
The reverse does not hold. A mod may be compatible with both loaders, but a mod made only for Quilt will not work on Fabric. The FAQ also says Quilt cannot load Forge or NeoForge mods.
The sources we read do not say how Quilt Loader handles Fabric API, so check each mod's own page before assuming a Fabric dependency is covered. Quilt Standard Libraries, which was meant as an alternative to Fabric API, was discontinued because keeping up with new Minecraft releases while staying compatible with Fabric API was not feasible. For the Fabric side of the setup, our Fabric install guide covers the loader. We have no Quilt install guide.
Version and mod support
On Fabric, the newest Fabric API build is 0.162.0+26.3, released 6 October 2026, and our catalogue shows Fabric builds for Fabric API from 1.14 to 26.3. Fabric's own blog says Minecraft 26.3, the Wilderness Bound game drop, releases on September 15th and asks players to give mod developers time to update.
For Quilt, the sources give no list of supported Minecraft versions and no statement about 26.3, so we give none. What they do say is that Quilt Loader is still in beta, and that Quilt Standard Libraries stopped in December 2025. Check the Quilt download page for the version you want before planning a pack around it.
For finding mods, we list a Fabric mods category and a roundup of popular Fabric mods. We have no matching Quilt listing.
What to pick if a modpack lists both
A Java mod runs only with the loader its build was made for, installed for the same Minecraft version. A Modrinth modpack is imported through a launcher that downloads the listed mods and the right loader, so the pack decides this for you. Follow the loader the pack names for the version you are installing, as in our modpack install guide.
If a pack offers both a Fabric and a Quilt file, Fabric is the safer default. Fabric mods run on both loaders in most cases, while a Quilt-only mod fails on Fabric. Choose Quilt only when the pack contains Quilt-only mods or you want the Quilt features above.
This Cobblemon pack is a Fabric file, and its page says Fabric is the recommended file over its NeoForge twin for performance.

Trade-offs of each side
- Fabric. Quilt-only mods will not load on it. Fabric API is a separate file you add, and each new Minecraft release waits on mod developers.
- Quilt. It adds crash-report warnings and mod sub-folders. It is still in beta, its own developer docs are unfinished, and its Standard Libraries project has stopped.
We give no speed or stability comparison because none of the sources we read provides one. When you update later, our Fabric update guide applies to the Fabric side.
