What you need to run shaders.
Shader packs need a shader loader; they are not mods you drop in alone. The standard on Java in 2026 is Iris paired with Sodium: faster than OptiFine in nearly every test, updated within days of each Minecraft drop, and required by some newer packs that are Iris-only. OptiFine still loads the classics but tends to lag behind new game versions.
Install Iris and Sodium, put packs in the shaderpacks folder, and switch them from video settings. Packs swap live, with no restart, so trying all six picks above takes minutes.
Java shaders vs Bedrock graphics.
Shader packs in this catalog are Java-only. Bedrock has its own rendering path: the built-in Vibrant Visuals mode covers what most players want there, and Bedrock shader projects beyond that are a separate, much smaller scene with their own install process.
Shader questions.
Do I need OptiFine for shaders?
Not anymore. Iris with Sodium is the standard shader loader on Java in 2026: better framerates, faster updates after each quarterly drop, and support for the same packs. OptiFine still works for most classics but misses some newer Iris-only packs.
Why are my shaders running slowly?
Shadow settings and render distance dominate shader cost. Drop the pack one profile tier, lower shadow distance, and make sure Sodium is installed alongside Iris. Packs like MakeUp Ultra Fast and Sildur's Lite exist exactly for weaker machines.
Do shaders work on Bedrock Edition?
Not these. Java shader packs do not load on Bedrock. Bedrock's built-in Vibrant Visuals mode delivers upgraded lighting and water there, and separate Bedrock-specific shader projects exist outside this catalog.
Do shaders change my world or save files?
No. Shaders are purely visual and purely client-side. Remove the pack or toggle it off and the game returns to vanilla rendering with no effect on your worlds.
