Pick a loader before you pick mods.
Every Minecraft Java mod is built for a loader. In 2026 that effectively means three: Fabric for performance and quality-of-life setups, NeoForge for big content and tech mods, and legacy Forge for older versions and packs.
Mods are not interchangeable across loaders. A Fabric jar will not load on NeoForge and vice versa, though many projects ship builds for both. Every mod page here lists its loaders and supported versions so you can check before downloading.
Fabric, NeoForge, or Forge.
| Loader | Strengths | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Lightweight, updates within days of each drop, home of Sodium and Iris. | You want speed, shaders, and client-side quality of life. |
| NeoForge | The successor to Forge. Most big content mods now target it first. | You want Create, Mekanism, and large packs on current versions. |
| Forge | The legacy giant with the deepest back catalog. | You are playing older versions like 1.20.1. |
Installing mods without breaking things.
Install the loader, then drop mod jars into the mods folder inside .minecraft. Match every jar to your exact game version; with Minecraft now shipping quarterly drops, version mismatches are the most common cause of crashes on launch.
Most mods also depend on a library mod (Fabric API, Architectury, and friends). Each mod page lists its dependencies so you can grab everything in one pass.
Java mod questions.
What is the difference between mods and plugins?
Mods change the game client through a loader like Fabric, NeoForge, or Forge, and usually every player installs them. Plugins run only inside server software like Paper and never touch the client. They are separate ecosystems with separate downloads.
Do Java mods work on Bedrock Edition?
No. Bedrock cannot load Java mods at all. Bedrock's customization system is addons, which work within Mojang's official pack format. See the Bedrock Addons section for those.
Which mod loader should I use in 2026?
Fabric for performance and client-side mods, NeoForge for content-heavy modding on current versions. Plain Forge mostly matters for older modpacks. When in doubt, pick the mods you want first, then use the loader they share.
Are the mods here safe to download?
Every mod indexed on MinecraftHub links straight to the creator's official source, usually Modrinth, CurseForge, or GitHub. Skip rehost sites: the jar you get there may be outdated, repackaged, or tampered with.
Do mods keep up with Minecraft's quarterly drops?
Loaders and mods now track the drop cadence (26.1, 26.2, and so on). Fabric projects usually update within days; large content mods can take longer, which is why many players and packs sit one or two versions behind on purpose.
