What custom maps are.
Custom maps are downloadable worlds built by players: adventures, puzzles, parkour courses, survival islands, and showcase builds. Instead of generating terrain from a seed, you play inside something someone designed by hand.
Java maps ship as world folders that go into the saves directory. Bedrock maps ship as .mcworld files that import when opened. The two formats do not cross over, so every map page here states its edition and version up front.
Custom map questions.
How do I install a Minecraft map?
On Java, unzip the download and place the world folder inside .minecraft/saves. On Bedrock, open the .mcworld file and the game imports it. The install guide linked below walks through both, including where the folders live per OS.
Do Java maps work on Bedrock?
No. Java world folders and Bedrock .mcworld files are different formats, and command systems differ between editions. Play the edition the map was built for.
Can I play custom maps in multiplayer?
Yes. On Java, set the map as a server's world or open it to LAN. On Bedrock, the host opens the world and friends join. Adventure maps usually state a recommended player count.
Why do maps require a specific Minecraft version?
Map makers build against one version's commands and mechanics. Opening a map on a newer version usually works but can silently break redstone, command blocks, or scripted sequences, so map pages here pin the intended version.
