Minecraft Maps

Custom maps are downloadable worlds built by players: adventures, puzzles, parkour courses, survival islands, and showcase builds. Instead of generating terrain from a seed, you play inside something someone designed by hand.

That is what separates a map from a seed. A seed is a number the game uses to regenerate terrain on demand. A map is a finished save file, with the builds, the command blocks, and sometimes a bundled resource pack already inside it.

Edition, version, player count, in that order. Java maps ship as a world folder and Bedrock maps ship as a .mcworld file, and the two games store worlds in different formats, so neither download opens in the other game. Java then checks the version a world was last played in, offering a backup when the save is older and warning about corruption when it comes from a newer release, which is why a map's stated version is worth matching. And a co-op map built for exactly two players is a wasted evening if you are playing alone. Every map page here states its edition and version up front.

The installs are different work. On Java the download is usually a zip, so unpack it and move the world folder into the saves folder inside your game directory, and the map appears in your singleplayer list. On Bedrock a .mcworld is a zip under another name, so opening the file hands it to the game and the world imports itself. A Bedrock map that arrives as a plain zip is the exception, and that one goes into the minecraftWorlds folder by hand on Windows, Android, or iOS. Consoles do not expose that folder, so on Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch a downloaded map file is not something you can install.
