What Bedrock addons are.

Addons are Bedrock's official customization system. Behavior packs change how mobs, items, and blocks act; resource packs change how they look; most addons bundle both. Because they run on the same Bedrock build everywhere, one addon works across phones, tablets, consoles, and Windows. 'MCPE addons' is the same thing under the old Pocket Edition name.

Unlike Java mods, addons cannot rewrite the game engine. The trade-off is safety and portability: a single .mcaddon file installs on a phone as easily as on a PC, with no loader to manage.

Installing and stacking addons.

Open a .mcaddon or .mcpack file and Minecraft imports it automatically. Then enable the behavior and resource packs on a world before loading in. Pack order matters when addons touch the same mobs or blocks, and a few addon features still sit behind the experiments toggles in world settings.

Consoles have no file browser, so addon content there generally arrives through the Marketplace or by joining a world that already runs it.

Bedrock addon questions.

  • Are addons the same as mods?

They fill the same role on Bedrock that mods fill on Java, but they work within Mojang's official pack system instead of modifying the game. That makes them safer and cross-device, with a lower ceiling on what they can change.

  • Do addons work on phones and consoles?

Yes, that is their main strength. Phones, tablets, and Windows import .mcaddon files directly. Consoles are stricter: content generally comes from the Marketplace or from joining worlds that already have the addon enabled.

  • Are addons free?

Many are. The Marketplace sells premium addons, and the community scene distributes free ones. MinecraftHub links each addon's official source, and we never mirror paid Marketplace content.

  • Why does an addon ask for experiments to be turned on?

Some addon capabilities still sit behind Bedrock's experimental toggles. The addon's page says which toggles it needs. Enabling experiments marks the world as experimental, so test on a copy if the world matters to you.

  • Do addons work on Java Edition?

No. Addons are Bedrock-only. Java's equivalents are mods for client and gameplay changes, data packs for vanilla-compatible tweaks, and plugins on servers.
