Geyser is a free program that lets Minecraft Bedrock Edition players join Java Edition servers. It sits between the two and translates data in both directions, so the Java server treats a Bedrock player like a Java one. Floodgate is its companion plugin, and it lets those players join without a Java account.
What Geyser is
GeyserMC describes Geyser as a translator between the Bedrock player and the Java server. It converts packets one way and then the other, and it works with any modern Minecraft version. Its wiki FAQ adds that Geyser emulates a Java Edition client, so the server believes a Java player is joining. Bedrock players can connect from Windows 10/11, iOS, Android and consoles, according to GeyserMC.
Geyser
Server Plugin by GeyserMC
The translation runs one way only. Geyser does not let Java players join a Bedrock server. The project's own page also warns that, because it translates packets between two different games, nobody should expect everything to work perfectly. For the wider picture of how the two editions differ, see Minecraft Java vs Bedrock Edition and which devices play together.
What Floodgate adds
Floodgate
Server Plugin by GeyserMC
Floodgate is a hybrid mode plugin. It lets Bedrock players join online mode Java servers without owning a Java account. They still sign in through Microsoft. Geyser does not strictly need it. Without Floodgate, Geyser can authenticate to Mojang in online mode, or join an offline mode server. The wiki FAQ calls that second route unsupportable and dangerous, and says it is against Mojang's EULA.
Floodgate changes how names work. Bedrock players can carry a username prefix, and commands must include it, with spaces turned into underscores. The FAQ's example is `/tp ".<bedrock_username>"`. It also adds `/fwhitelist add <bedrock_username>`, which matters when you follow our whitelist guide. Hangar lists Floodgate's latest update as 19 March 2023, read 14 October 2026.
What Geyser translates between Bedrock and Java
Because Geyser does not modify server behaviour, the FAQ says redstone, commands and farms work exactly as they do on Java Edition. Plugins generally work too, since Geyser emulates a Java player. The FAQ names exceptions, among them TCPShield without a paid plan, ProtocolSupport and SayNoToMcLeaks, mostly because Floodgate alters the login process.
Bedrock resource packs go in a `packs` folder beside the Geyser config, and Bedrock players download them automatically. The FAQ says there is no automatic Java-to-Bedrock pack conversion and points to a third-party converter. Bedrock players can swap main hand and offhand with `/geyser offhand`.
What does not carry over
Mods are the hard limit. The FAQ states there is no way for Geyser to translate the blocks, items and other features most mods add, so a server that needs mods installed on players' devices cannot be supported. Its rule of thumb is that if a vanilla player can join, so can a Geyser player. Our client-side and server-side mods page covers which mods fall on each side of that line.
Movement is another gap. The project lists near-perfect movement, to the point where anticheat on large servers is unlikely to ban a Bedrock player, as still to be done. A 2022 FAQ entry blames odd visual bugs far from spawn on Bedrock being 32-bit and Java 64-bit. The wiki keeps a Current Limitations page for what cannot be fixed. We have not tested any of this.
Where Geyser runs
Geyser installs as a plugin or mod, or runs as a standalone proxy that can join any Java server. Modrinth lists these builds, with 2.11.3-b1252 beta the newest on every platform.
| Platform | Java versions with builds | Needs |
|---|---|---|
| Paper | 1.16.5 to 26.2 | Nothing listed |
| Spigot | 1.16.5 to 26.2 | Nothing listed |
| Fabric | 1.19 to 26.2 | Fabric API |
| NeoForge | 1.20.4 to 26.2 | Nothing listed |
| BungeeCord | 1.21 to 26.2 | Nothing listed |
| Velocity | 1.21 to 26.2 | Nothing listed |
No Forge or Quilt builds appear in that list. On a proxy, put Geyser there, as covered in Minecraft proxy servers explained. Plugin setups follow the plugin install guide. The Modrinth listing says players install nothing, since Geyser is server-side only.
What a server owner needs to know
Bedrock players join over UDP on their own port, which is set in the Geyser config. The FAQ's example uses 19132. Modrinth's hosting help has you create a separate network allocation for it. Ngrok is TCP-only, so the FAQ points to playit.gg, which supports TCP and UDP.
The project page lists Java 26.2 as the supported Java version, with older ones covered by a separate guide. It lists Bedrock 26.30 to 26.52. Modrinth shows 1,441,968 downloads for Geyser, read 14 October 2026. For licence, Modrinth lists MIT and the FAQ says the project is MIT-licensed, but our check of the Geyser repository found no licence file. Floodgate's repository carries an MIT LICENSE. A server on Fabric or NeoForge can host Geyser too, as in our modded server hosting guide. We read these pages and did not run Geyser ourselves.
