Fix CurseForge Not Launching Minecraft

CurseForge not launching Minecraft usually clears with Repair Installation or by switching the app to the Mojang launcher. This guide covers the unexpected error message, install and login errors, Java, antivirus and crashes.

CurseForge not launching Minecraft usually clears with two moves: run Repair Installation from the three-dot menu, then switch Launcher settings from Use CurseForge launcher to Use Mojang launcher. If that does not do it, the cause is almost always the app install, the launcher setting, Java, a login problem, or security software blocking the connection. Match what you see to the sections below, from Play doing nothing to a crash right after the game opens.

Why CurseForge is not working

CurseForge is not the source of Minecraft's own launcher or Java runtime, so when it is not working, the actual failure usually sits one layer down. Start with the most common culprits: an outdated Java install, the app set to use the wrong launcher, an interrupted or corrupted install, or antivirus and firewall software blocking Overwolf, the platform the CurseForge app runs on, from reaching Minecraft's servers.

Play does nothing when you click it

Nothing happening after Play, or a "The System cannot find the file Specified" error, points at a broken app install rather than a broken modpack. Work through these in order.

  1. 1.Open the three-dot menu in the top right of the CurseForge app and select Repair Installation, then try launching again.
  2. 2.Switch to the Minecraft launcher instead of CurseForge's own: open Settings (the cog icon), select Minecraft under Game Specific, scroll to Launcher settings, and switch from Use CurseForge launcher to Use Mojang launcher. It doesn't matter whether the Launcher Type is set to Classic or Microsoft.
  3. 3.If you specifically see "The System cannot find the file Specified", check that Command Prompt (cmd.exe in C:\Windows\System32) has not been renamed or moved, since CurseForge calls it directly to launch the game.
  4. 4.If none of that helps, contact CurseForge support with your app logs. This error is one they ask users to report directly.

Failed to launch modpack, an unexpected error occurred

This message appears when you press Play on a modpack. CurseForge's support lists two fixes to try, then asks for your logs if the error stays.

  1. 1.Choose Repair installation from the dots menu at the top right, then launch the modpack again.
  2. 2.Open the cog menu, select Minecraft under Game Specific, and under Launcher settings switch from Use CurseForge launcher to Use Mojang launcher. Either Launcher Type works.
  3. 3.If the error persists, send CurseForge your logs. Their support asks for them in this case.

Errors while installing Minecraft through CurseForge

  • "An access violation occurred when attempting to install Minecraft launcher" is a permissions problem. Give your Windows user full read and write access to C:\Users\[user]\, or create a folder such as C:\curseforge\, choose the Advanced option during installation and set that folder as the modding directory.
  • "An unexpected error occurred while trying to install Minecraft" is a known issue CurseForge says it is still investigating. Contact their support with any details you have, because repairing is not listed as a fix.
  • "Couldn't load launcher core from..." or "Unable to start the Minecraft Runtime Environment" both call for Repair Installation from the menu on the right side of the app.

Login errors when launching from CurseForge

The Skip launcher beta lets CurseForge start Minecraft Java Edition without the Mojang launcher, and it has its own login step. If login fails, check that your computer's date, time and time zone are set automatically, then temporarily disable antivirus, VPN, proxy or content filters and try again. The account must own Minecraft Java Edition. If the error stays, switch back to Use Mojang launcher in the app settings and test the login there. The trade-off is that you lose the skip-launcher convenience; some versions are also unsupported, such as 1.7.2 and 1.5.2 on Forge for Windows.

The launcher opens then closes, or Minecraft never appears

A blank grey or black launcher screen, a launcher that closes right after opening, or Play doing nothing once the Minecraft launcher itself has opened are usually connection or security-software problems rather than a broken modpack.

  1. 1.Repair the installation from the same three-dot menu in the CurseForge app.
  2. 2.Close or temporarily disable antivirus, VPN, and proxy software. CurseForge specifically names McAfee's Real-Time Scanning feature as a known cause of Play doing nothing once the Minecraft launcher has opened.
  3. 3.Update your GPU drivers from the manufacturer's site (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel), since a blank launcher screen is also linked to outdated drivers.
  4. 4.Reset your system's hosts file if the launcher still fails to load, since CurseForge lists this among its fixes for connection-related launcher failures.

CurseForge gets stuck installing or downloading

A modpack that won't finish installing, or a download that stalls or fails, is most often Java, the modding folder path, or a network block rather than the modpack itself. The general steps for installing a modpack through the CurseForge app cover the normal flow; these are the fixes for when it stalls.

  1. 1.Confirm Java is installed and current. Java is required to run Minecraft modpacks, and an outdated version can still block installation even when it's already present; install the latest build from java.com/download.
  2. 2.Check your modding folder path. CurseForge does not reliably install into the desktop, a OneDrive folder, the vanilla .minecraft folder, a drive root such as C:\, or a path with non-English or special characters. Use the app's default path or a plain folder like C:\CurseForge.
  3. 3.Repair the installation from the three-dot menu, then try installing again.
  4. 4.If it's specifically a Forge modpack, check CurseForge's separate Forge modloader troubleshooting article for loader-specific steps.
  5. 5.Disable IPv6 only as a last resort, after the other steps have failed.

The game crashes with exit code 1 or right after it launches

Exit code 1 just means the Minecraft process quit with an error. See Fix Minecraft Exit Code 1 Crashes for how to read the actual crash log; the steps below are what CurseForge's own support recommends first.

  1. 1.Repair the installation from the three-dot menu.
  2. 2.Update GPU drivers directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel rather than relying on Windows Update.
  3. 3.Test whether every modpack crashes or only one does. If every profile crashes, create a custom profile with no mods installed. If that still crashes, the problem is the modloader or the game itself, not your mods; if it doesn't crash, reinstall or repair the one modpack that fails and contact its author if it persists.
  4. 4.If the crash only happens with one modloader (Forge, Fabric, Quilt, or NeoForge), CurseForge points you to that modloader's own developers rather than handling it directly.
  5. 5.If memory looks like the cause, check how much RAM Minecraft actually needs before raising the allocation. CurseForge's own support articles don't name an exact settings path for this, but every instance in the app has its own adjustable memory limit.

Frequently asked questions

Why does CurseForge say Play Demo instead of Play?

This means the launcher isn't reading a full Minecraft account, usually after a login hiccup. Log out of your Minecraft account inside the launcher, then log back in, making sure you're using the correct account. That refreshes your account status and should bring back the full Play button.

Does antivirus stop CurseForge from launching Minecraft?

Yes, it's a common cause. CurseForge's own support names McAfee's Real-Time Scanning specifically as a known trigger for Play doing nothing after the Minecraft launcher opens, and lists antivirus and firewall software generally as a cause of failed downloads and connection errors. Try disabling it temporarily to test.

What does Repair Installation actually fix in CurseForge?

Repair Installation sits in the dots menu at the top right of the CurseForge app. CurseForge's support lists it for "Failed to download file" and Error Code 0, "The System cannot find the file Specified", "Couldn't load launcher core from...", and the unexpected error when launching a modpack. Other errors need other steps, such as the logout and login fix for Play Demo.

Should I use the CurseForge launcher or the Mojang launcher?

Start with the CurseForge launcher, since it's the default and handles mod loading automatically. If a modpack fails with "Failed to launch modpack, an unexpected error occurred", CurseForge's own support suggests switching to the Mojang launcher instead from the app's Minecraft settings, under Launcher settings, as a working alternative.
