To make a brewing stand in Minecraft you need one blaze rod and a stone-tier block such as cobblestone. The rod is the hard part, because it comes from a Nether Fortress. Once the stand is placed it needs blaze powder as fuel before it brews anything. The recipe carries no Java or Bedrock split, and the small differences between the two are listed near the end.
Brewing stand recipe
The recipe is a blaze rod plus any stone-tier block. Cobblestone and its other variants can be used interchangeably, so the usual route is a blaze rod and three cobblestone. Nothing else goes into it.
- Blaze rod, one, from a Nether Fortress.
- Cobblestone or another stone-tier block.
- Blaze powder afterward, to fuel the stand.
- Glass bottles, nether wart and an ingredient once you start brewing.
Where to get blaze rods in the Nether
Blaze rods can only be obtained by raiding a Nether Fortress. That is the real cost of a brewing stand, and it means a trip into the Nether before you can make any potion. Bring back nether wart from the same fortresses, since most useful potions start from an awkward potion, and awkward potions are made with nether wart. A world backup before the trip is cheap insurance.
Skipping the crafting
You can also find a ready-made stand. Brewing stands generate in end ships with two Instant Health II potions in their holders, and in the basement of an igloo with a splash potion of Weakness. They can generate without potions in village churches. Any tool breaks a brewing stand, pickaxes are fastest, and breaking one drops everything inside it. The stand is stackable to 64 and renewable.
How to craft a brewing stand step by step
- 1.Collect one blaze rod from a Nether Fortress and enough cobblestone.
- 2.Open the crafting grid and place the blaze rod and the stone-tier blocks following the recipe.
- 3.Take the brewing stand from the result slot.
- 4.Place it, then press use on it to open its interface. It is labeled "Brewing Stand" by default, and you can rename it in an anvil before placing it.
If you are working through early crafting goals, the same habit of stockpiling materials applies to an enchanting table.
Fuel the brewing stand with blaze powder
Craft a blaze rod into 2 blaze powder. Each piece of blaze powder holds 20 charges, and each stage of brewing counts separately. A single brew takes 20 seconds (400 ticks). Unlike a furnace, the stand has no time limit. Fuel is consumed only when there are water bottles and an ingredient to brew into them, so a fueled stand can sit idle at no cost.
Hoppers can feed the stand. A hopper pointing down into the top delivers ingredients, and a hopper pointing into the side delivers bottles and fuel.
Brew your first potion
There is no in-game recipe book for brewing, so the steps below are the whole loop. A Potion of Swiftness is a sensible first target, since it needs only nether wart and sugar.
- 1.Craft glass bottles from glass.
- 2.Fill each bottle from a cauldron or a water source block to get water bottles.
- 3.Add blaze powder as fuel, then place the water bottles in the bottle slots.
- 4.Put nether wart in the ingredient slot. After 20 seconds the bottles become awkward potions.
- 5.Put sugar in the ingredient slot. The awkward potions become Potions of Swiftness (3:00), which give Speed.
From there, redstone dust extends a potion's duration and glowstone dust increases its level. The trade-off is that an enhanced potion has a shorter duration, and an extended potion cannot also be enhanced. Gunpowder turns a potion into a splash potion. You can place different potions in the bottle slots and treat them with one modifier at once.
Java and Bedrock differences
Crafting and fueling work the same way. The differences are in the block's properties and in some brewing outcomes. For the wider comparison, see Java vs Bedrock.
- Light. The stand emits light level 1 on Java and none on Bedrock.
- Water. The stand is waterloggable on Bedrock and not on Java.
- Pistons. Pistons cannot push a brewing stand on Java.
- Blaze powder as an effect ingredient. Corrupting a Potion of Strength gives no effect on Java and Weakness on Bedrock.
- Mundane and thick potions. Adding a fermented spider eye to them gives nothing on Java and a Potion of Weakness on Bedrock.
- Regeneration extended. It lasts 1:30 on Java and 2:00 on Bedrock.
Frequently asked questions
What do you need to craft a brewing stand?
You need a blaze rod and a stone-tier block. Cobblestone and its variants work interchangeably, and the usual recipe uses three cobblestone. The blaze rod is the limiting item, since it only comes from raiding a Nether Fortress. After crafting, you also need blaze powder as fuel to brew anything.
Where do you find blaze rods?
Blaze rods can only be obtained by raiding a Nether Fortress. Nether wart, which you need for awkward potions, is worth collecting on the same trip. One rod makes the stand, and each extra rod can be crafted into 2 blaze powder.
How long does blaze powder last in a brewing stand?
Each piece of blaze powder brews 20 batches, with each stage of brewing counting separately. A single brew takes 20 seconds. There is no time limit on the fuel, because it is consumed only when the stand has water bottles and an ingredient to brew into them.
Can you get a brewing stand without a blaze rod?
Yes, by finding one. Brewing stands generate in end ships, in igloo basements and in village churches. Any tool breaks them, and a pickaxe is fastest. Breaking one drops its contents, so you also collect any potions inside. Crafting your own still needs a blaze rod.
