Citadel

Citadel powers advanced entity animations and model loading for many other mods on Forge and NeoForge, without adding gameplay features on its own.

Citadel is a library mod for Forge and NeoForge on Minecraft Java Edition, required on both client and server for anything that depends on it. It adds no gameplay features by itself, instead giving other mods a framework for animating entities, loading custom models, and tracking entity properties.

Loaders and versions

  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20 to 1.21.11. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.14.4 to 1.20.1. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What Citadel provides

Citadel's code descends from LLibrary, used with permission from Gegy1000, LLibrary's maintainer. It handles the animation system, .tbl Tabula and .obj Wavefront model loading, and entity property tracking that dependent mods build their creatures on. It exists specifically so that kind of framework doesn't need to be rewritten by every mod that animates custom entities.

Installation

  1. 1.Download the Citadel build matching your loader and Minecraft version.
  2. 2.Place the Citadel jar in the mods folder alongside any mod that lists it as a dependency.
  3. 3.Match the loader profile in the launcher, following the Forge and NeoForge setup guide if the loader itself isn't installed yet.
  4. 4.Check the dependent mod's page for the exact Citadel version it expects.

Because Citadel is pure infrastructure, players rarely install it on purpose. It shows up as a required file whenever a mod's page lists it as a dependency, and it's required on both the client and the server. Anyone building their own mod on top of Citadel's animation or model systems should check the linked source for setup details in a development environment.

Questions about Citadel.

5 questions

What does the Citadel mod actually do

It doesn't add features on its own. Citadel is a framework other mods use for animating entities, loading Tabula and Wavefront models, and tracking entity properties, so it needs to be installed only because another mod requires it.

How do I install Citadel

Download the build matching your loader and Minecraft version, then place the jar file in the mods folder next to whatever mod requires it. It's required on both the client and the server.

Does Citadel work on Fabric

No. The builds listed here run only on Forge and NeoForge; Citadel isn't distributed for Fabric under this project.

Why do creature mods need a library like Citadel

Custom creature mods often need custom animation rigs and model formats that vanilla Minecraft doesn't support. Rather than every mod author writing that framework from scratch, Citadel provides shared code for animating entities and loading Tabula and Wavefront models, so dependent mods can focus on the creatures themselves.

Is Citadel safe to remove from an existing world

That depends on whatever mod required it; removing a shared library while its dependent mods are still installed will break them, so remove Citadel only after removing everything that lists it as a dependency.
