Starlight

Starlight is a Minecraft Java mod that rewrites the vanilla light engine to fix lighting bugs and cut the lag spikes that come from block updates and chunk loading. PaperMC's spottedleaf built it for Fabric and, separately, for Forge, but both builds stopped receiving updates in late 2023. This page covers what Starlight changes, why development ended, and which Minecraft versions can still run it.

Why development on Starlight stopped

PaperMC archived the Starlight repository on GitHub in March 2024 and said it would not receive further updates for the foreseeable future. Starlight was originally built to solve a server-side problem: vanilla's light engine was too slow for large, high-population servers. Once that rewrite proved itself, its core approach was folded directly into Paper's own chunk system rewrite and into Folia, Paper's regionized multithreading fork. Current Paper and Fabric server software already carries the lighting fix Starlight introduced, which is why the standalone mod became unnecessary and PaperMC stopped maintaining a separate version to keep up with new releases.

Which Minecraft versions Starlight still supports

• Fabric build: reaches 1.20.4, last published December 10, 2023.
• Forge build (separate Modrinth listing, starlight-forge): reaches 1.20.2, last published October 27, 2023.
• Neither build has a Quilt or NeoForge release.
• Neither build is compatible with or needed on current 26.x Minecraft versions.

Installing Starlight on Fabric or Forge

1. 1.Confirm the target game version is 1.20.4 or earlier (Fabric) or 1.20.2 or earlier (Forge).
2. 2.Install Fabric Loader or Forge for that exact game version.
3. 3.Download the matching Starlight build from the Fabric or Forge Modrinth listing and drop the jar into the mods folder.
4. 4.Starlight has no dependencies, so no extra library mod is required.
5. 5.Apply it on both the client and server for a dedicated server, or client-only for singleplayer.

What Starlight changes in-game

Starlight replaces vanilla's light engine end to end rather than patching around it. The rewrite removes the stutter that comes from breaking or placing light-emitting blocks, speeds up chunk loading in already-lit areas, and fixes long-standing lighting errors such as dark patches and incorrect skylight near chunk borders. The mod's own benchmarks, run on a flat test world, show it resolving light updates for a single block change many times faster than vanilla. On a busy multiplayer server that difference is measurable during heavy building or redstone activity; on a normal singleplayer world the correctness fixes matter more than the raw speed gain.
