ViaFabricPlus is a Fabric-only, client-side mod for Minecraft Java that lets one modern client connect to servers running almost any protocol version. It builds on the server-side ViaVersion project but runs entirely on the player's own machine, translating the connection there instead of on the server. Fabric builds currently span 1.19.3 through 26.3, and the project has over 7.7 million downloads on Modrinth.

What ViaFabricPlus changes

Minecraft's client and server only talk to each other when they share the same network protocol, which is normally tied to one specific game version. ViaFabricPlus rewrites that traffic on the client side so a current Fabric client can join servers well outside its own version, without swapping game installs or launcher profiles for every server.

  • Release versions from 1.0.0 up through the current build
  • Beta (b1.0 to b1.8.1), Alpha (a1.0.15 to a1.2.6), and Classic (c0.0.15 to c0.30, including the Classic Protocol Extension)
  • April Fools builds (3D Shareware, 20w14infinite, 25w14craftmine) and the Combat Test 8c snapshot
  • Bedrock Edition 1.26.20 servers, through the bundled ViaBedrock translation layer, though some Bedrock-only features are missing

How ViaFabricPlus differs from ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, and ViaRewind

ViaVersion, ViaBackwards, and ViaRewind are server plugins: an operator installs one once, and every connecting player benefits automatically, with no client-side install. ViaFabricPlus flips that around. It bundles equivalent ViaVersion and ViaBackwards protocol logic into a client mod, so a player can reach an older or unmodified server without the operator installing anything, but only that player gets cross-version access. Everyone else on the server stays on whatever version the server actually runs. Settings live in a dedicated screen through the mod's Mod Menu integration.

Installing ViaFabricPlus on Fabric

  • Requires Fabric Loader; there is no Forge or NeoForge build, and none is planned
  • Client-side only, it has no server functionality and should not be placed on a server
  • Bundles the specific Fabric API modules it needs internally, so no separate Fabric API download is required
  • Works only with the newest Minecraft client version; it does not let an older client join newer servers
  1. 1.Install Fabric Loader for the current Minecraft release
  2. 2.Download the ViaFabricPlus jar from its Modrinth page and drop it into the mods folder
  3. 3.Launch the Fabric profile and open a world or server connection as usual
  4. 4.Open the in-game protocol selection menu to pick the version to present to the server; ViaFabricPlus can also auto-detect it

Known limits and anti-cheat risk

Resource packs built for older versions are not translated, so cross-version resource packs are not supported. The Quilt build stopped receiving updates after version 2.10.0 in November 2023 and tops out at 1.20.2, well behind the current Fabric build, so Quilt players should not expect current-version support.

Questions about ViaFabricPlus.

5 questions

Can ViaFabricPlus join newer Minecraft servers?

No. ViaFabricPlus works only with the newest Minecraft client version and translates that client's connection down to older servers. It does not let an older client reach a server running a newer protocol than the client itself.

Does ViaFabricPlus work on Bedrock servers?

Yes, through its bundled ViaBedrock translation layer it can connect to Bedrock Edition 1.26.20 servers from a Java Fabric client. Java and Bedrock are separate games under the hood, so some Bedrock-only features are still missing rather than fully supported.

Do I need ViaVersion installed on the server to use ViaFabricPlus?

No. ViaFabricPlus is entirely client-side and does the protocol translation on the player's own machine, so it works against vanilla servers and servers that block plugins, with no server-side install needed.

Does ViaFabricPlus support Forge or NeoForge?

No. It is built only for Fabric, and the project has stated there will not be a Forge or NeoForge version. Forge and NeoForge players who want similar cross-version access need a different tool.

Is it safe to use ViaFabricPlus on a server with anti-cheat?

Not guaranteed. Some anti-cheat plugins can flag the protocol translation ViaFabricPlus performs as suspicious activity, and a server operator can still ban accounts that use it. Check a server's rules before joining with it.
