RealisticallyOptimized is a stylized realistic shader pack for Iris and OptiFine, made by bitz for players on modest hardware. It swaps photographic detail for toon-ramp lighting, strong outlines and deeper nights, and Modrinth files it under the potato performance tag. It is a player-side install only, with no part to add on a multiplayer host.

Shader loaders and versions

  • Iris and OptiFine: Minecraft 1.21.11 to 26.2. The newest build requires Iris Shaders; some builds for 26.1 need no dependencies.

Effects and features

The look is closer to a clean cartoon render than to true realism. Direct light is stepped into bands, and the shadow darkness and step count are adjustable. A depth-based white outline, inspired by Complementary, traces the world and can be tuned for thickness and brightness.

  • Real-time shadow mapping for terrain, entities, textured geometry and water.
  • Day and night colour tinting with a global vibrance control, plus an optional cool blue night and weather tint.
  • Brighter sky, sun and moon, with darker night grading.
  • Stronger blocklight and emissive handling for torches, lanterns, glowstone, sea lanterns, candles and campfires.
  • Glowing ores for iron, gold, copper, lapis, emerald, diamond, nether quartz, nether gold and redstone, with a strength setting (GLOWING_ORE_MULT).
  • Toon-lit water without a forced glow overlay, and waving vegetation.

Installation

  1. 1.Install Iris Shaders first, since the newest release requires it.
  2. 2.Put RealisticallyOptimized.zip in the .minecraft/shaderpacks folder.
  3. 3.Open Video Settings, then Shader Packs, and select RealisticallyOptimized.
  4. 4.Make sure Shadows are enabled in the Iris settings.

Trade-offs

The name promises realism, but the result is stylized, and the heavy outlines will not suit everyone. The feature set is narrow compared with large shader suites, and the pack is Java only, so Bedrock players cannot run it.

Questions about RealisticallyOptimized.

4 questions

How do I install RealisticallyOptimized?

Place RealisticallyOptimized.zip in the .minecraft/shaderpacks folder, then open Video Settings, Shader Packs and select it in Iris. Enable Shadows in the Iris settings. If shadows look wrong, raise Shadow Quality to at least 1024 and set Graphics to Fancy or Fabulous.

Does RealisticallyOptimized work with Iris and OptiFine?

Yes, both loaders are listed for the pack. The newest release requires Iris Shaders, while a build for 26.1 needs no dependencies. The creator's install steps are written around the Iris shader menu.

Is RealisticallyOptimized good for low-end PCs?

Modrinth tags it potato, which marks it as a light pack, and the creator describes it as performance-focused. That is a category label, not a hardware promise. Shadows must stay on, with Shadow Quality at 1024 or higher, so expect some cost from them.

Does RealisticallyOptimized have glowing ores?

Yes. Iron, gold, copper, lapis, emerald, diamond, nether quartz, nether gold and redstone ores glow, using per-ore groups and per-pixel ore-part detection. The strength is adjustable through the GLOWING_ORE_MULT setting.
