Joining a Minecraft server on a different version

Java Edition clients must match the server's version unless the server runs Via plugins or the player uses a client-side mod. Here is what each tool changes and where it stops.

Published Updated Checked

Not by default. A Minecraft Java Edition client can join only a Java server running the same version, and Mojang's own guide says so. Server owners can lift that limit with the ViaVersion plugins, and players can lift it on their side with the ViaFabricPlus mod. Bedrock Edition is a separate game and is not covered here.

Why a Java client and server must match

Mojang's guide to playing on a server (minecraft.net, published 5 June 2023) states that the version you play "needs to be the same version that the server is running". It adds that snapshot or preview players will likely need to switch back to the latest full release before joining most servers. Mojang's multiplayer requirements page (last edited 3 August 2026) adds that Java Edition players can only join Java Edition hosted games.

ViaVersion's documentation points at the mechanism: each Minecraft update changes the protocol, the way client and server talk. Its authors describe releases as lagging a Minecraft update by a few days "unless the protocol changes of the update were trivial". Facts here were read on 24 October 2026.

What the version mismatch message means

The sources we read do not quote the exact wording of the message or explain it, so we do not reproduce it. Mojang's rule is that the client's version needs to be the same as the server's, so a mismatch means that rule is not met. Changing the client's version is one route, covered in our guide on changing your Minecraft version. The translation tools below are the other. Fix Minecraft can't connect to server covers further causes.

What ViaVersion, ViaBackwards and ViaRewind change on the server

These projects translate packets so a client on another version is accepted. The ViaVersion README (GitHub, read 24 October 2026) lays out what each joining player needs the server to run.

ViaVersion

Server Plugin by kennytv

Java26.2Paper, Folia, Sponge, BungeeCord, VelocityLast checked

The base ViaVersion plugin runs on Paper and Velocity, and the README says it has the highest accuracy on Paper. Modrinth lists builds for Fabric, Folia, Paper and Velocity up to 26.3. Its BungeeCord and Sponge builds stopped at 1.20.6 on 30 May 2024.

ViaBackwards

Server Plugin by kennytv

Java26.2Paper, Folia, Sponge, BungeeCord, VelocityLast checked

ViaBackwards requires ViaVersion on the platforms we checked. For the oldest players, ViaRewind adds 1.8.x and 1.7.x clients and requires both ViaVersion and ViaBackwards in its newest build. The authors say to use the same release channel across all three. These are server plugins, so players install nothing.

What ViaFabricPlus changes on the client

If you do not run the server, the change moves to your side. ViaFabricPlus is a Fabric mod that builds on ViaVersion and lets the newest client connect to older servers. Its Modrinth page lists release servers from 1.0.0 to 26.3, plus Beta, Alpha, Classic and some April Fools versions. It says support for new Mojang releases is usually added within a few days.

ViaFabricPlus

Java Mod by florianreuth

JavaNot for Bedrock26.3FabricLast checked

Its limits are stated plainly: it works only with the newest client, runs only on Fabric (no Forge or NeoForge build is planned), affects multiplayer only, and does not run on servers. Its Quilt builds stopped at 1.20.2 in November 2023. The authors also warn that some servers may flag the mod with anti-cheat plugins. See How to install Fabric on Minecraft Java for the loader.

What these tools do not fix

  • Old clients on new worlds. ViaBackwards lists known issues: clients older than 1.17 cannot see or interact with blocks below y=0 and above y=255 in taller worlds, may see inventory desyncs, and get incomplete sound mappings.
  • Resource packs. ViaFabricPlus does not support resource packs from older versions across versions.
  • New releases. ViaVersion and ViaBackwards usually arrive a day or a few days after a Minecraft update, so a brand-new release can be unjoinable for a short time.
  • Bedrock. Mojang says Java Edition players can only join Java Edition hosted games. Bedrock is a separate game, and the ViaFabricPlus Bedrock addon is its own project that this article does not cover.

What this means if you run or join a modded or plugin server

Server owners choose the plugin route when many players sit on different versions; Minecraft proxy servers explained with Velocity and BungeeCord covers where ViaVersion fits in a proxy setup. Players who cannot change a server choose the mod route. To install plugins, see how to install plugins on a Minecraft server.
