A Minecraft Microsoft account is the free Microsoft sign-in that holds your Minecraft purchases, your Xbox gamertag and your Realms access. Mojang's own page describes it for Xbox, Windows, Android, iOS, PlayStation and Switch. It does not say how Java Edition sign-in works, and we did not test any sign-in.
What it is and where it applies
Mojang's page on Minecraft and Microsoft accounts says that on Xbox, Windows, and Android and iOS mobile devices you sign in with your Microsoft account and use your Xbox gamertag to save progress, purchases, and play online with friends using Realms. It adds that a free Microsoft account gives access to purchases, Realms and other content across all of your Minecraft devices, and that Microsoft accounts are free to set up and use on any Minecraft device.
The same Microsoft account also opens other Microsoft services such as OneDrive, Outlook.com and Office, according to a Microsoft Q&A community article (a 2025 repost of an older post by Nathan Roberts). So it is one general account that Minecraft uses, not a separate Minecraft login.
What signing in links
Going by Mojang's page, signing in connects four things: your saved progress, your purchases, your Xbox gamertag and your Realms. Behaviour at sign-in differs by device, as stated on the page and in the community article.
| Device | Sign-in behaviour | Online play note |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Signs in automatically with the gamertag used to buy the game through the Windows Store; a different account can be chosen | The page gives no extra online note for Windows |
| Xbox | Signs in automatically with the gamertag of the current Xbox profile | An Xbox Live Gold subscription is still needed to play online on Xbox consoles |
| PlayStation 4 | A free Microsoft account can be used to sign in | The community article says linking the account to a gamertag is needed for online multiplayer |
| Nintendo Switch | A free Microsoft account can be used to sign in | A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is still needed to play online |
On PlayStation 4 and Switch, the community article says online multiplayer needs your Microsoft account linked to your gamertag by entering a code at a Microsoft page, and gives cross play between platforms as the reason. It says this link is not needed on Xbox One or Windows 10. That article is a community repost, so treat the details as dated. For the device pairings that actually play together, see Is Minecraft cross platform.
Age and family settings
Mojang's page says a player under 13 needs a parent's permission to finish setting up the Microsoft account. It also says parents can set permissions for child and teen accounts. What those permissions cover is in Minecraft parental controls.
What it means if you play with mods, packs or a server
The sources we read say nothing about mods, packs or servers, so we draw no rule from them. If you are unsure which edition your purchase covers before you add anything, start with Minecraft Java vs Bedrock Edition and what the Java and Bedrock bundle includes. Moving a licence to another person is a separate question, covered in Can you transfer a Minecraft account or its licence.
What the sources do not say
- Why Java Edition asks for a Microsoft account. Mojang's page names Xbox, Windows, Android, iOS, PlayStation and Switch, not Java by name.
- What the Mojang account migration changed. None of the pages we read describe it, so we make no claim about dates, deadlines or what happened to old accounts.
- Account security steps. No page we read covers them, so we give none.
- Switching accounts in the launcher. Mojang has a help article on it, but the text we could read held no usable content, so we cite nothing from it.
