Minecraft server port defaults for Java, Bedrock and Geyser

Which network ports a Java server, a Geyser setup and the optional query and rcon features use, and where the main port is changed.

Published Updated Checked

The default Minecraft server port for Java Edition is 25565, set by the `server-port` line in `server.properties`. A port is a numbered network door on the machine hosting the world. Geyser, which lets Bedrock players join a Java server, adds its own port, 19132 by default. Facts below were read on 19 October 2026.

Default Minecraft server ports for Java and Bedrock

Java Edition. Both the PaperMC documentation and the Minecraft Wiki list `server-port = 25565` as the default, described as the port the server listens on for connections. The Minecraft Wiki calls 25565 the main Minecraft TCP port. The `server.properties` file in the wiki's default content for 26.3 carries the same value.

Bedrock Edition. The Bedrock Dedicated Server page on minecraft.net says players on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, mobile and Nintendo Switch can all join with the same server IP address and port. It does not print a port number, and the pages we read give no figure for the Bedrock Dedicated Server's own port or an IPv6 port. We will not guess one here. The only Bedrock-side default in our sources is Geyser's, covered below. The two editions are separate games, so see Minecraft Java vs Bedrock Edition for what else differs.

What port forwarding is

Port forwarding means telling your router or modem to send traffic arriving on a chosen port to the machine that runs the server, which is what lets people outside your home network connect. GeyserMC's documentation says some ISPs block ports or use CGNAT, and that a tunnel such as playit.gg is an alternative. We give no router steps here. If players still cannot connect, start with Fix Minecraft can't connect to server.

How to change the port in server.properties

On Java Edition, edit `server-port` in `server.properties`, which sits in the folder the server software was started from. The Minecraft Wiki says the server must be restarted for changes to take effect. The same file has `server-ip`, which the PaperMC documentation says binds to all interfaces when left blank. If you change the port, any forwarding rule or firewall rule has to follow the new number.

The extra port a Geyser setup needs

A Geyser setup keeps the Java port and adds the Geyser port, 19132 by default. In the GeyserMC documentation, the NetherNet option needs that port open for both TCP and UDP, because players find the server over TCP and play over UDP. The "NetherNet and RakNet" option also needs the `webrtc-port` open for UDP, and external signaling such as Warden needs only UDP for WebRTC. GeyserMC's Docker example maps 25565, 19132 and 19132/udp. For what Geyser is, see What Geyser is and how Bedrock players join Java servers.

Some hosts block these ports by default. GeyserMC names OVH, SoYouStart and Oracle Cloud, and says OVH's game firewall rules for Bedrock only support RakNet, so the `Other` rule is needed for the Geyser port.

Other ports a server can open

The default `server.properties` for Java also holds ports for optional features. All three features are off by default.

Java Edition ports in the default server.properties, from the Minecraft Wiki and PaperMC docs, read 19 October 2026
SettingDefault portWhat it doesDefault state
server-port25565Main connection port for playersAlways on
query.port25565Query, a UDP protocol that returns server informationOff (enable-query = false)
rcon.port25575Remote access to the server consoleOff (enable-rcon = false)
management-server-port0Minecraft Server Management ProtocolOff (management-server-enabled = false)

The Minecraft Wiki warns that rcon is not encrypted, so its password can be intercepted, and says ideally you connect to it only from localhost. Do not forward 25575 unless you have a reason. Query is Java only. For hosting a modded server end to end, see How to host a modded Minecraft server on Fabric or NeoForge.
