Refined Storage vs AE2 for Minecraft Java Storage Networks

A source-based comparison of Refined Storage and Applied Energistics 2 on storage model, autocrafting, learning load, loaders, add-on hooks and running both in one pack. No winner, only who each one fits.

Pick Refined Storage if you want the mod whose makers aim for simplicity, on NeoForge or Fabric. Pick Applied Energistics 2 if you want channels, spatial storage and a deeper tech system, or a NeoForge 26.3 alpha. Loader and Minecraft version often decide it before taste does.

Refined Storage and AE2 at a glance

Both mods sit in our storage and inventory mods listing, and both are Java Edition only. We compared their Modrinth pages, the Refined Mods site, the AE2 Players Guide and each project's repository files. We did not play either mod, so every statement about feel or difficulty below is attributed to the people who wrote it.

How each mod stores items

Refined Storage

Refined Storage

@Refined Mods · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.20.1 to 26.1.2

Checked Source and install notes

Its page describes a network-based system that holds items and fluids on a massively expandable device network. Every storage device on the network shows up in one Grid interface, a single unified GUI over many inventories. Importers, exporters, constructors and destructors move items and blocks in and out of that network.

Applied Energistics 2

Applied Energistics 2

@shartte · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.18.2 to 1.21.1

Checked Source and install notes

Its page describes items and blocks stored as energy in digital form across connected devices. A channel system limits how many devices one cable can carry, which its makers say adds planning to a build. Spatial storage cells can hold a whole region of the world, and the crafting parts use new materials such as Certus Quartz and Fluix Crystals.

How autocrafting is set up

AE2 describes setting up patterns and recipes that the network crafts on demand. Refined Storage describes devices that let you set up autocrafting and then craft complex recipes in a few simple clicks. Neither page lists the exact devices or steps, and we did not build either system, so we give no step count. The AE2 Players Guide is the place to read the real setup.

What you have to learn before a first working network

The two projects frame this differently. Refined Mods says Refined Storage settled on simplicity, accessibility and intuitive design. The AE2 page says the mod is known for complexity and depth in tech gameplay, and its channel limit is a rule you plan around from the first cable.

Refined Mods also argues that no write-up replaces building a network in both mods and that the gap shows once you are hands-on. We have no measure of learning time, so the honest reading is this. AE2 asks you to learn more systems, and Refined Storage describes itself as asking for fewer.

Loaders, versions and add-ons

On NeoForge both mods cover 1.20.1 upward, and AE2 reaches 26.3 where Refined Storage stops at 26.1.2. On Fabric they do not overlap in our data, because Refined Storage starts at 1.21.1 and AE2 ends at 1.20.1. Refined Mods advertises Refined Storage for NeoForge and Fabric only, and its Forge builds stopped at 1.20.1.

On add-ons, the sources we read name no add-on mods for either project, so we make no claim about the add-on scene. What the data does show is AE2's optional hooks into recipe viewers and tooltips. Its builds list Just Enough Items and Roughly Enough Items among the optional integrations, alongside EMI, Jade, WTHIT and The One Probe. For loader basics see Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge.

Can a pack run both

The sources do not say the two conflict, and neither lists the other as a dependency or an incompatibility. We did not test them together, so treat this as untested. A shared pack needs one loader and one Minecraft version that both cover. On our data that is NeoForge from 1.20.1 to 26.1.2, or Forge 1.20.1. Fabric has no shared version.

If a pack or server already ships one of them, that usually decides it. Both are required on the client and the server, so everyone who joins needs the same mod. For the loader setup, see how to install Forge and NeoForge or install Fabric.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Refined Storage if you play NeoForge or Fabric on 1.21.1 to 26.1.2, want its stated focus on simplicity and prefer an MIT licence. The trade-off is that the Forge builds have stopped and Fabric needs Fabric API.
  • Pick Applied Energistics 2 if you want channels, spatial storage and a larger tech system, or you need NeoForge 26.3. The trade-offs are an alpha on the newest version, GuideME as a requirement on NeoForge and Forge, and Fabric stopping at 1.20.1 in our data.
  • Pick neither on sight if a modpack already chose for you. Match its loader and version, then use how to install mods to place the file.

Download counts on Modrinth are 6.1 million for AE2 and 2.8 million for Refined Storage. They say how many people fetched each file, not which one suits you, and we draw no conclusion from them.
