Just Enough Items, usually shortened to JEI (JustEnoughItems in its repository), is an item and recipe viewer for Minecraft Java Edition. It puts a searchable item list beside your inventory, and from any item you can open its crafting recipes or everything it is used in. Builds exist for Fabric (1.18.2 to 26.3), NeoForge (1.20.4 to 26.3) and Forge (1.8 to 1.21.1). It is optional on both client and server.
Install JEI
Pick the file that matches both your Minecraft version and your loader. New to mods? See how to install Minecraft mods on Java Edition, or set up Fabric or Forge and NeoForge first.
- 1.Install Fabric, Forge or NeoForge for your Minecraft version.
- 2.Download the matching JEI .jar from Modrinth, plus MezzConfig if the file lists it as required.
- 3.Put the .jar files in .minecraft/mods.
- 4.Launch with the loader's profile and open your inventory to see the item list.
Dependencies
The newest Fabric and NeoForge builds require MezzConfig, with MezzConfigGUI optional. The newest Forge build requires nothing, but some Forge builds for 1.19.2 to 1.21.1 do need MezzConfig. Dependencies differ from build to build, and only some older builds need MezzConfig, so check the dependency list on the exact file you download.
Controls and search
- Hover over an item and press R for its recipes, or U for its uses.
- Ctrl + O toggles the item list overlay. Ctrl + F selects the search bar.
- Type @ before a word to search by mod name, - to exclude a term, and quotes around words that contain spaces.
- Advanced search uses # for tooltips, $ for OreDict names and % for creative tabs. Separate several searches with |.
- Cheat mode gives items by click. Edit mode hides items, or every item from a mod, with Ctrl-click.
- The [+] button in a recipe view moves ingredients into the crafting area.
Client and server
On 1.21.1 and lower, JEI runs client-only against a vanilla server, but the [+] button, cheating in items with lots of NBT data, and deleting items are disabled. Since 1.21.2 recipes are stored on the server, so JEI and the loader must be installed there to sync recipes to players.
Forge support and alternatives

Is Just Enough Items client side?
JEI is optional on both sides. On 1.21.1 and lower it runs client-only on a vanilla server, with the move-items [+] button, cheating in NBT-heavy items and deleting items disabled. From 1.21.2, recipes live on the server, so install JEI and the loader there as well.
Does JEI have dependencies?
