Just Enough Items (JEI) is a recipe and item browser mod for Minecraft Java Edition. It adds a scrollable item panel to the right side of every inventory screen, letting you search for any item in the game and immediately see how to craft it, what it can be used to make, or how to brew it. JEI works on Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge, has no required dependencies, and runs on both the client and server.

How to Install Just Enough Items

Download the JEI file that matches your Minecraft version and mod loader from the Modrinth project page. Install it the same way as any other mod for your loader.

  1. 1.Install your mod loader: Fabric Loader, Forge, or NeoForge for your Minecraft version.
  2. 2.Download the JEI .jar file matching your version and loader from modrinth.com/mod/jei.
  3. 3.Place the .jar file in your .minecraft/mods folder.
  4. 4.Launch Minecraft with the loader profile and open any inventory screen to confirm the item panel appears.

Using the Item Panel and Recipe Lookup

Once installed, JEI shows a scrollable panel of every item available in your game on the right side of your inventory. Type in the search bar at the bottom to filter by item name, mod name, or tooltip text. Use keyboard shortcuts to look up recipes and uses directly from your inventory or any container screen.

  • R on any item in the JEI panel or your inventory: show crafting recipes for that item.
  • U on any item: show all recipes that use that item as an ingredient.
  • A in the search bar: toggle between filtering the JEI panel and highlighting matching items in your inventory.
  • @modname in the search bar: filter all items from a specific mod.
  • O: toggle JEI's item panel overlay on and off.

Loader and Version Compatibility

JEI has been maintained since Minecraft 1.8 and covers every major version through 1.21. It runs as both a client-side and server-side mod with no required library dependencies. When installed on both sides, it can sync server-side recipe changes to the client display. Many mods publish native JEI recipe pages so their custom crafting systems appear in the same interface.

  • Supported loaders: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge.
  • Supported Minecraft versions: 1.8.9 through 1.21.11 (select the file matching your version).
  • No required mod dependencies.
  • Compatible with Sodium and Iris when installed alongside JEI on Fabric.
  • Many mods add native JEI recipe pages for their custom crafting systems.

Questions about this entry.

  • How do I install Just Enough Items?

Download the JEI .jar for your Minecraft version and loader (Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge) from modrinth.com/mod/jei. Drop it into your mods folder and launch the game with the matching loader profile. No additional library mods are required.
