Pick Sodium if you play on Fabric or NeoForge with a current release: it has builds up to 26.3. Embeddium's newest build is dated 2025-01-24.

Embeddium started as a fork. Its page says it is based on the last FOSS-licensed Sodium code and adds bugfixes and features for mod compatibility. It also states that CaffeineMC does not support it, so its issues do not go to the Sodium tracker or Discord. Credits on that page name Asek3 for the initial Forge port.
Loaders and Minecraft versions each supports
Sodium
@CaffeineMC · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Sodium supports Fabric and, since 0.6.0 according to its README, NeoForge. It has no Forge build. Its Quilt builds stopped at 1.20.6, so Quilt is not a current target. The README prefers Fabric for new users, calling it more lightweight and stable for the time being.
Embeddium
@FiniteReality · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Embeddium covers three loaders, but none past 1.21.4. Its newest build overall is dated 2025-01-24, more than a year before our read date, and its last Fabric build is from 2024-07-11. No later release plan appears in the sources we read.
For the loader decision itself, see Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge.
Features and settings compared
Embeddium lists the Sodium 0.5.8 and earlier optimizations, including those to the immediate-mode pipeline used by entities, GUIs and block entities. It adds integrated Fabric Rendering API support (Indium is no longer required and will not work with it), extra integration APIs, frequent compatibility patches and optional translucency sorting in Video Settings.
Sodium's own page says it enables every optimization your system supports by default and that you probably do not need to configure it. Its latest news, dated 16 June 2026, says 0.9.x for Minecraft 26.2 has early Vulkan support. Fabric's 26.2 announcement (fabricmc.net, 15 June 2026) says 26.2 lets the backend switch between OpenGL and an experimental Vulkan backend, with OpenGL planned for removal once Vulkan is stable. Embeddium's builds end before that.
Sodium officially supports desktop graphics cards with OpenGL 4.5 drivers, and says Android and OpenGL translation layers are unsupported. Embeddium's page gives no hardware statement. Neither page gives a frame rate number we can cite, so we give none.
Shader support
Neither project page we read states how it works with shader loaders, so we make no claim about Embeddium and shaders. The only shader mention is in Sodium Extra's dependency list, where Iris Shaders is optional on Fabric and NeoForge. If shaders are your goal, check the shader loader's own page for the renderer it names, then use Fix Minecraft Shaders Not Working if packs fail.
When the choice is already made for you
- Fabric on a current release: Sodium, because Embeddium's Fabric builds stop at 1.20.6.
- NeoForge on 1.21.5 or newer: Sodium, because Embeddium's NeoForge builds stop at 1.21.4.
- Forge on 1.20.2 or older: Embeddium, the only one of the two with Forge builds.
- Quilt: neither lists a current build for it. Sodium's Quilt builds stopped at 1.20.6 and Embeddium has none.
A modpack that already ships one of them decides the rest. Do not swap the renderer in a pack without checking its pack page. Setup is covered in How to Install Fabric and How to Install Forge and NeoForge.
Trade-offs of each side
Embeddium is free and open source and reaches Forge, but it is a fork of older Sodium code, unsupported by CaffeineMC, and has had no build since 2025-01-24. Both are client-only: a server does not need either, as client-side vs server-side mods explains.
Add-ons and compatibility to check first
Sodium Extra
@FlashyReese · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Sodium Extra adds animation, particle, detail, render and extra settings. Its newest builds for Fabric and NeoForge require Sodium, and we found no statement that it pairs with Embeddium.
Reese's Sodium Options
@FlashyReese · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Reese's Sodium Options replaces Sodium's options screen with a tabbed layout and a search bar. It also requires Sodium. Its page says it has no affiliation with CaffeineMC. For other performance mods, see the optimization mod ranking.
