Sodium, Entity Culling and ImmediatelyFast are the three most downloaded optimization mods we list on Modrinth. Sodium replaces the rendering engine, Entity Culling skips drawing entities you cannot see, and ImmediatelyFast speeds up immediate mode rendering such as text, HUD and particles. This page is the top 12 of the 44 pages in our Minecraft performance mods listing, with the loaders, the side and the stated purpose of each.

How we picked these optimization mods

We chose from the 44 optimization mods we list. We sorted them by Modrinth downloads, read on 2 October 2026, and took the top 12 in order with no skips. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them, and every description below is what the mod's own page says it does. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score. Two of the twelve, Zoomify and Clumps, carry Modrinth categories other than optimization, and we say so where they appear.

The 12 most downloaded optimization mods

Sodium

Sodium

@CaffeineMC · Java Mod

JavaFabric, NeoForgev 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Pick Sodium if you want a rendering engine replacement and nothing else. Its Modrinth summary calls it a high-performance engine that improves frame rates and reduces micro-stutter, and its page says it optimizes only the rendering code. The newest Fabric and NeoForge builds require no other mod. The trade-offs: those newest builds are marked alpha, Quilt builds stopped at 1.20.6, and the project offers official support only for desktop graphics cards with OpenGL 4.5 drivers. Android and Windows-on-ARM translation layers are unsupported.

Entity Culling

Entity Culling

@tr7zw · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.16.5 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Entity Culling suits players in busy bases or modded worlds with many entities and block entities. Its page says it uses spare CPU threads for asynchronous path-tracing, so entities hidden behind walls are not drawn, and that it does not touch server-side mob behaviour or farms. The trade-offs are practical. Fabric builds need Fabric API, and block entities that render beyond their bounds, such as the vanilla beacon, need whitelisting. The page also says a CPU that is already maxed out has no spare time for the visibility checks.

ImmediatelyFast

ImmediatelyFast

@RaphiMC · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.18.2 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

ImmediatelyFast targets immediate mode rendering, which its page lists as entities, block entities, particles, text, GUI and HUD, plus other mods that use it. It batches draw calls and uploads data to the GPU more efficiently. It has Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt and Forge builds, and the newest builds need no other mod. Its page names known incompatibilities with OptiFine and with closed-source clients such as LunarClient and LabyMod. The page also says gains appear only where the CPU is the bottleneck. Forge builds stop at 1.21.4.

Sodium Extra

Sodium Extra

@FlashyReese · Java Mod

JavaFabric, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.16.5 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Sodium Extra is for Sodium users who want more settings. Its page describes bringing OptiFine-style options to Sodium: animation, particle, detail, render and extra settings, including controls for sky, weather, fog and a FPS and coordinates display. On every loader its newest build requires Sodium, so it is no use on its own. Reese's Sodium Options and Iris are listed as optional. Its Modrinth page lists a repository, but we found no licence file in it.

ModernFix

ModernFix

@embeddedt · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.16.5 to 26.1.2

Checked Source and install notes

ModernFix is the all-rounder for modded play. Its page calls it an all-in-one mod that improves performance, reduces memory use and fixes bugs, and says most Forge 1.16 to 1.19.2 modpacks launch roughly twice as fast with it. That is the creator's claim, not ours. It is optional on both client and server. The trade-offs: its dynamic model loading is off by default because of compatibility issues, and loader coverage is uneven, with Fabric builds ending at 1.21.4 and Forge at 1.20.2 while NeoForge continues to 26.1.2.

More Culling

More Culling

@FX · Java Mod

JavaFabric, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.18.2 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

More Culling is the second culling mod in this list, and it changes how several types of culling are handled rather than tracing line of sight. Its page defines culling as not rendering things the player cannot see, and points to a wiki covering what is culled and compatibility. It has Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt builds, but no Forge builds. The newest builds on all three are betas and require Cloth Config API. Its page also points to a separate MoreCullingExtra mod for extra culling features.

Zoomify

Zoomify

@isxander · Java Mod

JavaFabricv 1.18 to 26.3

Checked Source and install notes

Zoomify is a zoom mod, not a frame-rate tool, and Modrinth files it under utility only. It sits in this list because of its download count. Its page highlights scroll zoom, spyglass integration, 14 transitions, relative sensitivity and presets, including one that mimics OptiFine. On Fabric, the newest build requires YetAnotherConfigLib, Fabric Language Kotlin and Fabric API, which is a long dependency list for one feature. Quilt builds stopped at 1.20.5, and there are no Forge or NeoForge builds.

Dynamic FPS

Dynamic FPS

@juliand665 · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.14.4 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Dynamic FPS is for laptops, handhelds and anyone who tabs out of the game often. Its page says it detects whether the window is active, hovered, unfocused or invisible, and lets you set frame rate, volume and toast behaviour for each state, plus idle and on-battery rules. It also says it fixes a vanilla bug that caused higher than necessary background CPU use. To reach the config screen you also need Mod Menu and Cloth Config. The optional battery integration fetches an extra library at runtime, which can be switched off.

BadOptimizations

BadOptimizations

@thosea · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.19.1 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

BadOptimizations suits players who already run a rendering mod and want gains elsewhere. Its Modrinth summary says it focuses on things other than rendering, and its page describes a collection of micro optimizations. Examples are caching lightmap updates until brightness inputs change, skipping debug renderer logic when debug is off, and a cheaper sky colour calculation on 1.21.10 and below. Any optimization can be disabled in the config file. It has no dependencies. Forge builds stop at 1.20.4. The repository linked from Modrinth has no licence file we could find.

Krypton

Krypton

@astei · Java Mod

JavaFabricv 1.16.2 to 26.3

Checked Source and install notes

Krypton optimizes the networking stack, and its README says most of the benefit shows up for a server administrator. The page describes Netty handlers derived from the Velocity proxy, flush consolidation and packet serialization micro-optimizations. It is Fabric only, and optional on both client and server. The developer states plainly that there are no guarantees about stability or compatibility with other mods, that updates for new Minecraft versions come as personal time allows, and that the mod is tuned for Linux.

Language Reload

Language Reload

@Jerozgen · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Quiltv 1.17.1 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Language Reload is a quality-of-life mod that Modrinth tags as optimization because it cuts load times around languages. Its page lists fast language switching without a resource pack reload, a search box in the language menu, multiple selected languages with fallbacks, and multilingual item search in the creative inventory and recipe book. It has Fabric and Quilt builds only, and the newest build requires Fabric API. Its latest build targets 26.2, and its last update on Modrinth was 2026-06-19, older than every other mod here except none.

Clumps

Clumps

@jaredlll08 · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.12.2 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Clumps is the one pick that is mainly a server tool. Its page says it groups XP orbs into a single entity to reduce lag where many gather, and that it makes the player collect orbs on touch. On 1.17 or newer it is required only on the server side, while older versions need it on both sides. Modrinth files it under storage and utility rather than optimization. Its Fabric build requires Fabric API.

How to choose between them

Start with your loader, because a build for one loader will not run on another. Sodium, Entity Culling, ImmediatelyFast, Sodium Extra, More Culling, Dynamic FPS and BadOptimizations cover Fabric and NeoForge, while Krypton, Zoomify and Language Reload are Fabric-led. Then check the side. Krypton, ModernFix and Clumps matter on a server, and the rest are client mods. Our client-side and server-side mods explainer covers what that means for a shared world, and Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge helps if you have not picked a loader yet.
