A Minecraft modpack is a ready-made bundle of mods, plus the mod loader they need, that a launcher installs in one step. The packs we list are Java Edition packs hosted on Modrinth, which publishes Java content. Every page we list is in the modpacks listing, and this page only explains the idea.
We did not play or test any pack here.
How a modpack differs from a single mod and a loader
People mix up three things. A mod changes the game. A loader is the base layer a mod runs on. A modpack is a chosen set of mods that a launcher downloads together with the loader, so you do not collect the pieces yourself.
| Term | What it is | How it reaches the game |
|---|---|---|
| Single mod | One .jar file that runs only with the loader it was made for (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt), on the same game release | The .jar and each required dependency go in the mods folder, then you launch with the loader's profile |
| Mod loader | The layer that lets mods run. Fabulously Optimized, for example, uses Fabric | Mods run only with the loader their build was made for, see Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge |
| Modpack | A chosen list of mods that a launcher downloads together | A launcher that reads Modrinth packs (.mrpack files) downloads the listed mods and the right loader |
The mods-folder route is covered in how to install Minecraft mods on Java Edition. A pack removes that manual work, and it also removes some choice, since the author decides what is inside.
What a modpack can and cannot be
Packs are not all alike. Fabulously Optimized says it includes no content mods, so it works on any world or server, and Modrinth lists it as required on the client and unsupported on the server. Cobblemon Modpack [Fabric] and Homestead are listed as required on both sides, so a server needs the matching setup too. Mine In Abyss Modpack is optional, since its creators say you can join their server with a vanilla client. The difference is explained in client-side vs server-side mods.
Aged adds another wrinkle. Its creator says it is built for singleplayer since v3.0.0, and offers Aged Lite as a lighter variant with close to no visual mods.
Where modpacks are hosted
The packs shown on this page are hosted on Modrinth, which publishes Java content. The Fabulously Optimized readme also links a CurseForge page, so a pack can live on both. Pick the host the pack's author names. Our comparison of Modrinth and CurseForge covers the platforms, and for more on download sites see where to download Minecraft mods.
What a launcher does for a modpack
The launcher is the program that reads the pack file, fetches every listed mod and installs the right loader. For Modrinth packs that means the Modrinth App, or Prism Launcher and other launchers that read .mrpack files. Steps are in how to install a Minecraft modpack and how to use the Modrinth App.
Modpacks worth looking at first
These three differ in purpose. Fabulously Optimized focuses on performance and graphics, and its Modrinth page says it supports most OptiFine features.
