A Minecraft shield takes six wood planks and one iron ingot at a crafting table, no enchanting or special tools involved. Once it's equipped, raising it blocks most attacks coming from the front outright, though a few things get past it, and a single axe hit shuts it down for a few seconds right when you need it most.
What you need to craft a shield

Equipping and blocking with a shield
On Java Edition, put the shield in your off hand and hold right-click, or the use-item key, to raise it. On Bedrock Edition, sneaking with the shield equipped raises it instead. It takes about a quarter of a second to come up, and once it's up, non-piercing attacks from the direction you're facing deal no damage at all, not a percentage reduction. Coverage is a semicylinder in front of you, not your whole body, so an attacker circling around still connects.
