Minecraft Bedrock Shaders Explained

Minecraft Bedrock cannot run Java's OptiFine or Iris shader packs. Here is what actually creates shader-like visuals on Bedrock: Vibrant Visuals, RTX ray tracing, and shader-style resource packs.

Updated

Minecraft Bedrock Edition cannot run the shader packs Java players use. OptiFine and Iris are Java-only tools built for Java's rendering pipeline, and their shader files have nowhere to go on Bedrock. What Bedrock offers instead is different: a built-in lighting upgrade called Vibrant Visuals, RTX ray tracing on supported Windows PCs, and shader-style resource packs on marketplaces like MCPEDL and CurseForge that fake the look through textures and lighting rules.

Why Java shader packs don't run on Bedrock

OptiFine and Iris are shader loaders for Minecraft Java Edition. They inject custom rendering code straight into Java's graphics pipeline through a shaderpacks folder that only those tools create. Bedrock Edition runs on a different engine with no shaderpacks folder, no shader-loader mod, and no way to load third-party rendering code at all. A shader .zip downloaded for Java simply has nowhere to load on Bedrock, on any device or platform. Our guide to installing shaders on Java and Bedrock covers the exact Java-side steps if that is what you actually need.

Vibrant visuals, Bedrock's built-in lighting upgrade

Vibrant Visuals is Mojang's own graphics upgrade for Bedrock, not a downloaded pack. It switches the game to a physically based rendering pipeline with directional lighting and shadows, volumetric fog, water reflections, and emissive textures on blocks like lanterns and magma. Turn it on from Video settings, under Graphics mode, on any device where it has rolled out.

  • Windows: a GPU that supports DirectX 12 feature level 12_1
  • Android: an Adreno 640, Mali-G68, Mali-G77, or Xclipse 530 GPU or newer
  • iOS and iPadOS: an A12 Bionic chip or newer
  • Xbox Series X and Series S: on by default; Xbox One and One X: off by default
  • PlayStation 5: on by default; PlayStation 4: off by default

Vibrant Visuals is not available at all on ChromeOS, Fire tablets, or the original Nintendo Switch, and support for Nintendo Switch 2 is still rolling out. That is the honest limit: it needs recent hardware, and a large share of Bedrock's console and mobile install base sits below that bar, so the same world can look completely different from one player's device to the next.

Minecraft Bedrock ray tracing on supported hardware

Ray tracing, often shortened to RTX, is a separate and heavier graphics mode from Vibrant Visuals, and it is limited to Windows Bedrock Edition. You will need 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 Series (or newer) or AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series (or newer) graphics card, and up to date GPU drivers with DirectX ray tracing support.

Ray tracing also needs a resource pack built for it, one that declares ray tracing materials in its manifest. Without a compatible pack applied, the Ray Traced option in Video settings will not appear even on hardware that meets the spec.

Shader texture pack Bedrock options on MCPEDL and CurseForge

Search MCPEDL or CurseForge for Bedrock shaders and you will mostly find resource packs, sometimes labeled shader packs, that fake dramatic lighting through textures and lighting-rule tweaks. Because Bedrock blocks third-party rendering code entirely, none of them can do what a real Java shader does. What they can do is retint fog and sky colors, adjust biome lighting, and swap in moodier textures, all using tools Bedrock's resource pack format already supports.

Some newer packs go a step further and ship physically based rendering textures built for Vibrant Visuals. On a device that supports Vibrant Visuals, that combination looks closer to a real lighting overhaul. On a device that does not, the same pack just falls back to being a plain texture pack. Either way, it is a visual approximation, not real shader code, however dramatic the screenshots look.

Which option fits your setup

  • Widest device support, least setup: turn on Vibrant Visuals if your device is on the supported list above.
  • Most realistic reflections and shadows: a Windows PC with an RTX 20 Series+ or RX 6000 Series+ GPU, paired with a ray-traced resource pack.
  • Older hardware or a console without Vibrant Visuals: a shader-style resource pack from MCPEDL or CurseForge for a quick mood change.

Whichever route you pick, installing it is the same process as any other Bedrock resource pack. See installing resource packs on Java and Bedrock for the exact steps, and if a pack you already installed is not showing any change, our guide to fixing shaders that aren't working covers Bedrock's failure cases specifically.

Frequently asked questions

Do Minecraft Bedrock shaders exist?

Not in the Java sense. Bedrock has no shaderpacks folder and no way to load custom rendering code, so nothing called a Bedrock shader pack works the way an Iris or OptiFine shader does on Java. Bedrock players get shader-like visuals instead through Vibrant Visuals, RTX ray tracing, or shader-style resource packs that approximate the look with textures.

Can I use OptiFine or Iris shaders on Minecraft Bedrock?

No. OptiFine and Iris are Java Edition tools, built around Java's rendering pipeline and file format. Bedrock cannot open a Java shader pack, has no equivalent loader, and offers no folder to put one in. Downloading a Java shader for a Bedrock world will not do anything.

What is Vibrant Visuals in Minecraft Bedrock?

Vibrant Visuals is Mojang's built-in graphics upgrade for Bedrock Edition. It adds directional lighting and shadows, volumetric fog, water reflections, and emissive textures through a physically based rendering pipeline. It is a Video settings toggle, not a download, and it only appears on devices with hardware that meets Mojang's requirements.

Does Minecraft Bedrock ray tracing work on Xbox?

No. Ray tracing on Bedrock is limited to Windows, and it needs an NVIDIA RTX 20 Series or AMD RX 6000 Series GPU or newer, plus a resource pack built with ray tracing materials. Xbox and PlayStation players get Vibrant Visuals instead, which is a different and less demanding graphics mode.

Are MCPEDL shader packs real shaders?

No, not in the Java sense. A shader-style pack on MCPEDL or CurseForge is a resource pack that changes fog, sky, and lighting colors through textures and lighting rules Bedrock already supports. It is a visual approximation, not custom shader code, so results vary more than the screenshots suggest.
