Installing a Minecraft resource pack means putting the downloaded file into the game's resourcepacks folder, then turning it on from the in-game menu. Java Edition uses a .zip file you drop into that folder by hand. Bedrock Edition uses a .mcpack file that installs itself when you open it. Neither format needs unzipping or a separate app, and neither uses the mods folder, which is a different folder entirely.
Download a resource pack
Grab a pack from a source you trust before touching any folder. Bare Bones and Faithful 32x are two well-supported starting points if you just want something reliable to test the install steps with. Keep the download packaged: a .zip for Java, a .mcpack for Bedrock. Do not extract either one first.
Where the resourcepacks folder lives
Java and Bedrock keep resource packs in separate folders, on separate paths, for every operating system.

Install a resource pack on Minecraft Java
- 1.Download the pack's .zip file and leave it zipped.
- 2.Open the resourcepacks folder for your system, using the path above.
- 3.Drop the .zip file straight into that folder.
- 4.In Minecraft, open Options, then Resource Packs.
- 5.Find the pack in the Available column and move it into Selected.
- 6.Click Done. Java loads the pack on the next world or menu screen.
Options, Resource Packs also has an Open Pack Folder button that jumps straight to the same resourcepacks folder, so you rarely need to type the path out. A pack like Jicklus installs the exact same way, no companion mod required, which makes it a good second test once the first pack is working.
Add a resource pack on Minecraft Bedrock
A .mcpack file installs itself. Double-click it on desktop, or tap it on mobile, and Minecraft opens, imports the pack, and confirms it is ready to turn on. This works the same way on Windows, console, and mobile Bedrock, since a phone or tablet running Minecraft is also running Bedrock Edition; open the downloaded .mcpack from the Files app or the download notification and it installs the same as on a PC.
If double-clicking or tapping does not launch the import, the manual route is copying the .mcpack's contents into the resource_packs folder inside com.mojang, at the path shown above. Importing through Minecraft itself is faster and avoids typing that path out, so treat the manual copy as a fallback rather than the default.
Apply a pack globally or to just one world
Settings, Global Resources applies a pack to every world by default: open it and move the pack into the active column the same way you would in a world's own settings. A pack turned on inside one world's Resource Packs tab only affects that world and stays off everywhere else. Global is the simpler default for something like a UI or sky pack you want everywhere; per-world control suits a texture pack you only want on one server or map.
Turn packs on and get the stacking order right
Moving a pack into the active column, Selected on Java or the equivalent list on Bedrock, is what turns it on. Order inside that list matters as soon as more than one pack is active: the pack nearer the top overrides the ones below it for any texture both packs touch. A pack lower in the list still applies everywhere the pack above it doesn't.
- Drag entries in the active list, or use the arrow buttons next to a selected pack, to reorder them.
- The pack at the top of the list wins any conflict with the packs beneath it.
- A pack that only changes one thing, like Dramatic Skys replacing just the sky, belongs above a full texture pack so it isn't overridden by it.
When a pack shows a version warning
Every resource pack declares a pack format number tied to the Minecraft release it was built for. Load a pack built for an older release and Minecraft will usually still load it, but shows a one-time warning that the pack was made for a different version. Most of the pack keeps working. A texture added in a release after the pack was last updated just falls back to the default vanilla look instead of breaking the rest of the pack. This applies across current Minecraft versioning too, not only older 1.21.x-style releases, so check the pack page for its supported version range before assuming a warning means the pack is broken.
