3D Skin Layers is a client-side Minecraft Java mod by tr7zw that replaces the flat outer skin layer rendering with a genuine 3D model. The jacket layer, hat, outer pants, and outer boot sections all gain real depth, making custom skins read as intended on the player model. It runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt from version 1.12.2 through 1.21.11 and requires no server-side installation.
How to Install 3D Skin Layers
Download the release for your loader and Minecraft version from Modrinth. For Fabric, you also need Fabric API in the mods folder. For Forge and NeoForge, no extra libraries are required. Place the jar in .minecraft/mods and launch the game.
- Fabric: requires Fabric API. Mod Menu and Cloth Config API are optional for the in-game settings screen.
- Forge: no additional dependencies. Drop the jar in your Forge mods folder.
- NeoForge: no additional dependencies. Same installation as Forge.
- Quilt: Fabric API or Quilt Standard Libraries are both accepted.
Compatibility with Sodium, Iris, and Other Visual Mods
3D Skin Layers targets player skin geometry only and does not interact with Sodium's chunk renderer or Iris's shader pass. Both run alongside it without issue. Fresh Animations and Entity Model Features modify entity animation rigs rather than player geometry, so those combinations are also stable. Simple Voice Chat includes optional integration, and Mod Menu exposes an in-game settings screen when installed together with Cloth Config API.
Configuration
With Mod Menu and Cloth Config API installed, 3D Skin Layers adds a settings screen in the Mods list. Options include toggling the 3D effect per skin layer and adjusting first-person rendering behavior. Without those optional mods the defaults apply automatically, so no configuration is required for the mod to work out of the box.

Questions about this entry.
How do I install 3D Skin Layers?
Download the release for your loader and Minecraft version from the Modrinth page. For Fabric, place both 3D Skin Layers and Fabric API in your mods folder. For Forge and NeoForge, only the single jar is needed. Drop it into .minecraft/mods and restart the game.
Does 3D Skin Layers work with Sodium or Iris?
Yes. 3D Skin Layers is client-side and only modifies player skin geometry. It does not touch Sodium's chunk rendering or Iris's shader pipeline. Both combinations are widely used without reported conflicts.
Is 3D Skin Layers compatible with Fresh Animations or Entity Model Features?
Generally yes. Fresh Animations and Entity Model Features target entity animation rigs, while 3D Skin Layers modifies player geometry only. They run on separate rendering paths and typically coexist without issues.
Does 3D Skin Layers work on multiplayer servers?
Yes. The mod is client-side only and needs no server installation. Other players without the mod see your skin as normal. Only clients with 3D Skin Layers installed will see the 3D rendering on player models.
Which Minecraft versions does 3D Skin Layers support?
Releases cover Minecraft Java 1.8.9 through 1.21.11 across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt. Check the Modrinth releases tab for the file that matches your exact version and loader combination.
