Skin Layers 3D is a Minecraft Java mod that replaces the flat second layer of player skins with a fully 3D-modeled version. It runs on Fabric, NeoForge and Forge, and it is purely visual and client-side. Jackets, sleeves, hats and other overlay details gain real depth.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.15 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API; some builds for 1.15 to 1.20.1 need no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.2 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.8.8 to 1.21.10. The newest build needs no dependencies; some builds for 1.15 to 1.15.2 require MixinBootstrap.
What it changes
- The outer skin layer becomes an extruded 3D model instead of a flat texture.
- Transparent pixels are supported, so glasses, visors and similar details work.
- The same treatment applies to player head items.
- Beyond 12 blocks, rendering falls back to vanilla 2D to keep framerates up in crowded areas.
Installation and side
Install it only on your own machine. Servers do not need it. Pick the file for your loader and Minecraft release, then drop it into the mods folder. Our guides cover Fabric and Forge and NeoForge setup. Fabric users on current releases also need Fabric API.
Compatibility
Essential, Shoulder Surfing Reloaded and playerAnimator work with it, which covers mods built on playerAnimator such as Better Combat and Emotecraft. CustomSkinLoader has partial support and needs a helper mod. Lunar Client is not supported. HD skins do not work, because their pixels would not have the correct shape.
If the layers vanish, check Options, Skin Customization, confirm the mod's features are on in its settings, and make sure the skin actually has second-layer pixels. Skins should load through Mojang. Layers floating away from the body usually point to an outdated ETF or EMF resource pack.
Questions about Skin Layers 3D.
4 questions
Does Skin Layers 3D need to be installed on the server?
No. The mod is purely visual and runs entirely on your own machine, so it works on multiplayer servers without any server-side install. It also switches to vanilla 2D rendering beyond 12 blocks, which helps keep framerates steady in multiplayer and crowded areas.
Does Skin Layers 3D work with HD skins?
No. Skin Layers 3D does not work with HD skins, since their pixels would not have the correct shape. If your layers are missing on a regular skin, check Options, Skin Customization, and the mod settings, and make sure your skin actually has things on the second layer.
Why are my 3D skin layers missing?
First check Options, Skin Customization, to confirm your skin layers are enabled. Then confirm the mod's features are on in its settings and that it appears in the mod list. Your skin must also have pixels on the second layer, and it should load through Mojang.
Does Skin Layers 3D work with CustomSkinLoader?
Support is partial. CustomSkinLoader needs a helper mod to work alongside it. Skins loaded through Mojang are the safest option, since other skin loaders might not be supported.
