Clumps

Clumps merges nearby XP orbs into a single entity, so a mob grinder stops flooding the world with hundreds of separate objects. It runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and on 1.17 and newer it only needs to be on the server.

Clumps is a small Minecraft Java mod for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge that merges nearby experience orbs into one entity and hands you the whole stack the moment you touch it. Anywhere a lot of experience lands at once, a mob grinder, an enderman farm, a stack of thrown bottles o' enchanting, the game goes from tracking hundreds of separate objects to tracking one. On Minecraft 1.17 and newer it is only required on the server side, which makes it an easy addition to a world other people play on.

What Clumps changes in-game

Vanilla Minecraft spawns one entity for every experience orb. Clear fifty mobs in a grinder and the game is ticking, moving and syncing fifty separate objects, all drifting toward you at the same time, and that is where the frame rate goes on a client and the tick rate goes on a server. Clumps groups those XP orbs into a single entity carrying the combined value, so the entity count stays low no matter how much experience is on the floor.

The second change is smaller and you notice it faster. Orbs are collected the instant they touch you rather than trickling in over several seconds, so you are not standing inside a slow-draining cloud waiting for the level bar to catch up.

The honest limit is that Clumps only helps where many orbs land at the same moment. A normal survival world, where you kill a few mobs and mine some ore, will feel no difference at all, because there was never a pile of entities to merge in the first place. If the lag you are chasing is not coming from a farm, spark will show you where the time actually goes before you start stacking more mods on top.

Loader and version support

Clumps ships a separate build per loader, and the three builds are not on the same schedule.

  • Fabric 26.2.1, published 17 June 2026, for Minecraft 26.2. This build declares Fabric API as a required dependency, so install that alongside it.
  • NeoForge 26.2.1, published 17 June 2026, for Minecraft 26.2. No extra dependencies.
  • Forge 29.0.0.1, published 18 December 2025, for Minecraft 1.21.11. No extra dependencies.
  • Older builds reach back to Minecraft 1.10.2, so an aging modpack version is usually still covered.

The Forge build uses a different version-number series and sits one Minecraft version behind the other two, so do not read 29.0.0.1 as newer than 26.2.1. Match the build to the Minecraft version you are running, not to the biggest number.

Client and server installation

Which side you install Clumps on depends on the Minecraft version, and getting that wrong is the usual reason it looks like the mod is doing nothing.

  • Minecraft 1.17 and newer, including the 26.x releases: only required on the server side.
  • Minecraft older than 1.17: install it on both the client and the server.
  • Single player runs its own internal server, so putting the jar in your mods folder covers you either way.

Past that it is the ordinary mod routine. Install the matching loader, drop the jar into the mods folder, and on Fabric add Fabric API next to it. Our walkthrough on installing Minecraft mods on Java Edition covers the folder locations and the loader setup if you have not done this before.

Questions about Clumps.

5 questions

Is Clumps client side or server side?

On Minecraft 1.17 and newer, including the 26.x releases, Clumps is only required on the server side. On versions older than 1.17 it has to be installed on both the client and the server. Single player worlds run an internal server, so putting the jar in your mods folder covers both sides in that case.

Does Clumps change how much XP I get?

No. Clumps merges the orbs into one entity that carries their combined value, so the total experience you receive is the same as vanilla. The only difference is that it arrives in one piece the moment you touch the merged orb, instead of trickling in from dozens of separate ones.

How do I install Clumps?

Install Fabric, Forge or NeoForge for your Minecraft version, then put the matching Clumps jar in the mods folder. On Fabric you also need Fabric API in the same folder. For a multiplayer world on 1.17 or newer, the jar goes on the server rather than on each player's client.

Which Minecraft versions does Clumps support?

The current Fabric and NeoForge builds target Minecraft 26.2, and the current Forge build targets 1.21.11. Older builds go back as far as 1.10.2, covering the common modpack versions in between such as 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2, 1.20.1 and 1.21.1.

Does Clumps need Fabric API?

Yes on Fabric. The current Fabric build lists Fabric API as a required dependency, so the mod will not load without it. The Forge and NeoForge builds declare no dependencies and run on their own once the loader is installed.
