Dynamic Surroundings is a client-side Java mod that layers ambient biome sound, waterfall and hot-block visual effects, and sound remapping onto vanilla Minecraft. This Fabric and NeoForge rewrite by OreCruncher is the successor to the older Forge-based Dynamic Surroundings line, and the current builds reach Minecraft 1.21.1 on both loaders.
What Dynamic Surroundings changes
- Biome ambience: atmospheric background sounds tied to the biome the player is standing in, blended as they move between biomes.
- Hot block effects: flame jets over lava, magma blocks, and campfires, plus steam where flowing water meets a hot block.
- Waterfall sound and visuals that trigger near flowing water, with splash particles scaled to fall height.
- Sound remapping for thunder and block-step sounds, replaced with alternate versions.
- Individual sound control: a key bind to block, cull, or adjust the volume of specific sound instances.
- A custom debug HUD, bound to its own key, that moves Dynamic Surroundings info out of the vanilla F3 screen.
- Compatibility with Serene Seasons, where season and temperature can influence effects.
Fabric and NeoForge installation and requirements
The mod runs entirely client-side. There is nothing to install on a server, and it works fine connecting to a vanilla server on either loader. For Minecraft 1.21.1 it needs Java 21 or newer and Architectury API 13.0.8 or newer on both loaders. Fabric additionally needs Fabric Loader 0.16.9+ and Fabric API 0.110.0+1.21 or newer; NeoForge needs NeoForge 21.1.84 or newer.
- Optional: Cloth Config, for the in-game configuration menu. Without it, the mod still runs but its settings screens are unavailable.
- Optional: Mod Menu on Fabric, to list the config screen from the mods menu.
- Recommended pairing: Presence Footsteps, for matching footstep acoustics.
Dynamic Surroundings, the CurseForge history, and the Sounds packs
Dynamic Surroundings has one continuous CurseForge listing that runs from the original 1.7.10 Forge mod through today's Fabric and NeoForge 1.21.1 builds. It is the same OreCruncher project, not a separate legacy page. OreCruncher also published a standalone "Dynamic Surroundings: Fabric Edition" project for Fabric 1.20.1 and 1.20.4; that project's own description now points new updates back to the main Dynamic Surroundings page. A "Dynamic Surroundings Sounds Pack" also exists on Modrinth and CurseForge, but it is a separate resource pack by creator L41NX, unrelated to OreCruncher's mod beyond sharing part of the name.

Questions about Dynamic Surroundings.
5 questions
How is this different from the older Fabric Edition listing on CurseForge?
Dynamic Surroundings: Fabric Edition was OreCruncher's standalone build for Fabric 1.20.1 and 1.20.4. That project now tells its own users to follow the main Dynamic Surroundings page for anything newer, since current 1.21.1 Fabric and NeoForge builds ship from there instead.
Is Dynamic Surroundings the same mod on CurseForge and Modrinth?
Yes. OreCruncher publishes the same Fabric and NeoForge builds to both platforms. CurseForge's "dynamic-surroundings" listing has hosted this project continuously since its 1.7.10 Forge days, so it is not a separate legacy copy of the current mod.
Does Dynamic Surroundings work with Forge?
Not right now. The current rewrite depends on Architectury API, which does not yet support Forge for Minecraft 1.21.1. OreCruncher plans a Forge release once that support exists, but no date is set.
Is the Dynamic Surroundings Sounds Pack made by the same creator?
No. The Dynamic Surroundings Sounds Pack is a separate resource pack by creator L41NX. It reuses part of the name but has no connection to OreCruncher's Dynamic Surroundings mod.
Does Dynamic Surroundings need to be installed on a server?
No. It is a 100% client-side mod. Installing it only on your own client is enough, and it works normally when connecting to a vanilla server on either Fabric or NeoForge.
