Presence Footsteps is a footstep sounds mod for Minecraft Java on Fabric and Quilt. It continues Huricaaan (Ha3)'s original mod, now maintained by Sollace. Every block gets a material, and each material makes its own sound underfoot. It is client-side: you install it on your own game, and a multiplayer server does not support it.
What Presence Footsteps changes
Wooden chests sound creaky and old, stone sounds dusty and rough, and piston heads sound like wood while their bodies sound like stone. Tall grass rustles dryly as you walk through it, and magma sounds like it is cooking. Some non-block entities have step sounds too: shulkers make box creaks, boats sound like wood, and armour stands creak and step like stone on their base.
The sounds are not locked in. The mod ships its own sounds and material mappings for vanilla blocks, and a community resource pack can override any of them. For modded blocks, it reads the vanilla material and sound type the block uses and picks a sound from that. A mod with unusual sounds can set its own mappings, following the guide on the project wiki.
Loaders, versions and dependencies
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.16.1 to 26.3. The newest build needs Fabric API; older builds differ, so check the dependencies on the file you pick.
- Quilt: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3, with Fabric API required.
- Builds for 1.20.2 to 1.20.4 also need Kirin.
- Optional: Mine Little Pony.
- Side: client required, server unsupported.
- LiteLoader builds for 1.7.10 to 1.10 stopped in December 2023 and are not current.
How to install Presence Footsteps

- 1.Install Fabric or Quilt for your Minecraft release.
- 2.Download the Presence Footsteps .jar built for that loader and release.
- 3.Download the matching Fabric API .jar if your build requires it.
- 4.Place both .jar files in the mods folder inside your game directory (.minecraft/mods by default).
- 5.Launch Minecraft with the Fabric or Quilt profile.

Is Presence Footsteps client side?
Yes. It is required on the client and unsupported on servers, so you install it only in your own mods folder. A multiplayer server does not need it, and the footstep sounds you hear come from your own game.
Does Presence Footsteps work on Quilt?
Yes. Quilt builds exist for Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3 and require Fabric API. Fabric builds go back further, starting at Minecraft 1.16.1.
Can I change the footstep sounds?
