Presence Footsteps is a Fabric and Quilt mod for Minecraft Java Edition that replaces the standard footstep audio with a material-aware acoustic system. Instead of a single generic footstep sample for every surface, each block type generates a distinct sound profile based on what it is made of: hollow blocks sound hollow, wet surfaces carry a splash undertone, and wooden planks respond differently from packed soil. The mod runs client-only and requires no server installation, with releases covering Minecraft 1.16.5 through 1.21.11.

What Presence Footsteps Changes

Vanilla Minecraft plays footstep sounds from a small set of samples grouped by broad surface category. Presence Footsteps extends that system by assigning acoustic profiles to individual block types across the full block registry. Walking across gravel sounds loose and uneven, netherrack carries a dry hollow resonance, and packed ice plays a crunch distinct from regular snow. The mod also responds to movement state: crouching produces quieter steps, sprinting shifts the rhythm, and wading through shallow water adds a splash layer absent in vanilla.

  • Material-specific footstep profiles for gravel, dirt, stone, wood, metal, ice, sand, and more
  • Movement-aware audio: crouching, sprinting, and water-wading each produce distinct acoustic behavior
  • Hollow and resonant blocks (glowstone, glass, barrels) carry acoustically appropriate responses
  • Compatible with mod-added blocks via configurable block-to-material mappings
  • Client-only: no server installation required

How to Install Presence Footsteps

Presence Footsteps requires Fabric API alongside the main mod file. Download both from Modrinth for the Minecraft version you are running, then place the JAR files in your .minecraft/mods folder.

  1. 1.Install Fabric Loader for your target Minecraft version.
  2. 2.Download Presence Footsteps from Modrinth.
  3. 3.Download Fabric API for the same Minecraft version.
  4. 4.Place both JAR files in your .minecraft/mods folder.
  5. 5.Launch Minecraft using the Fabric profile.

Compatibility

Presence Footsteps handles audio only and does not touch rendering or gameplay systems, so it runs alongside Sodium, Iris Shaders, LambDynamicLights, and most other client-side mods without conflict. The mod ships with a default block-to-material mapping that covers the full vanilla block registry. Blocks added by other mods that are not mapped will fall back to vanilla footstep behavior unless you add a mapping entry via the config file.

  • Loader: Fabric, Quilt
  • Required dependency: Fabric API
  • Optional: Mine Little Pony (adds pony-specific locomotion sounds)
  • Side: client-only (no server install needed)
  • Minecraft versions: 1.16.5 through 1.21.11

Configuration

The mod includes a configuration screen accessible through Mod Menu if installed. Options include volume multipliers for surface categories, toggles for crouching and swimming acoustic overlays, and the ability to disable specific block sound assignments if they conflict with other mods. Config changes are written to .minecraft/config/presencefootsteps.json and most volume adjustments take effect without a restart.

Questions about this entry.

  • How do I install Presence Footsteps?

Install Fabric Loader for your Minecraft version, then download Presence Footsteps and Fabric API from Modrinth. Drop both JAR files into your .minecraft/mods folder and launch using the Fabric profile. The mod is client-only, so it works on any server without a server-side install.

  • Does Presence Footsteps work with Forge or NeoForge?

No. Presence Footsteps is built for Fabric and Quilt only. There is no Forge or NeoForge port available. If your modpack runs on Forge or NeoForge, you would need to look for a different sound-overhaul mod for your loader.

  • Is Presence Footsteps compatible with Sodium and Iris Shaders?

Yes. Presence Footsteps is an audio-only mod and does not interact with rendering at all, so it runs alongside Sodium, Iris Shaders, LambDynamicLights, and most other client-side performance and visual mods without causing conflicts.

  • Does Presence Footsteps need to be installed on the server?

No. It is a client-only mod, meaning you install it in your own .minecraft/mods folder and it works regardless of which Java Edition server you connect to. Server operators do not need to install it, and it will not appear in server-side mod lists.

  • Which Minecraft versions does Presence Footsteps support?

Presence Footsteps has active Fabric and Quilt releases covering Minecraft 1.16.5 through 1.21.11. The project has a long history dating back further on older loaders. Check the Modrinth page to find the correct file for your exact version.
