Mekanism is a long-running Java Edition tech mod that brings industrial-scale machinery to Minecraft. It adds a complete energy network (Joules), multi-stage ore processing, chemical plants, gas turbines, and a tier of powered armor with built-in flight and self-repair. The mod runs on both Forge and NeoForge and has been actively maintained from 1.7.10 through 1.21.1.
What Mekanism Adds
Mekanism extends the vanilla ore cycle into a five-stage processing chain that multiplies raw ore yield up to 5x. Beyond ore processing, it adds generators (solar, wind, heat, fusion), Quantum Entangloporters for long-range item and energy transfer, a chemical production tree for hydrogen, ethylene, and nuclear materials, and the Mekasuit: a modular power armor with flight, magnetism, and auto-repair modules.
- Ore processing: up to 5x yield with enrichment chambers, purification chambers, and dissolution chambers
- Energy: Joules (J) stored in energy cubes and transmitted via Universal Cables
- Generators: solar, heat, gas-burning, advanced solar, wind, and fusion reactor
- Chemicals: hydrogen, oxygen, chlorine, sulfuric acid, ethylene, and more via chemical processing chains
- Mekasuit: modular power armor with jetpack, nutrition, and gravitational modules
- Quantum Entangloporter: wireless cross-dimensional transfer of items, fluids, energy, and gases
- Digital Miner: configurable automatic mining robot with filter support
How to Install Mekanism
- 1.Install Forge or NeoForge for your Minecraft version from their respective sites.
- 2.Download the Mekanism JAR for your loader and Minecraft version from the Modrinth page.
- 3.Place the JAR in your .minecraft/mods folder.
- 4.Launch Minecraft with the Forge or NeoForge profile. Mekanism has no required dependencies.
- 5.For extra content, also install Mekanism: Generators, Mekanism: Defense, and Mekanism: Tools as separate JARs from the same Modrinth page.
Forge and NeoForge Compatibility
Mekanism supports Forge from 1.7.10 onward and NeoForge from 1.20.4 onward. The current release targets NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. Fabric and Quilt are not supported. The mod ships as the core JAR plus optional companion modules (Generators, Tools, Defense) that can be added independently.
- Forge: 1.7.10, 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2, 1.20.1
- NeoForge: 1.20.4, 1.21, 1.21.1
- Fabric and Quilt: not supported
Working with Other Mods
Mekanism integrates with a range of popular tech and utility mods. JEI and EMI both display Mekanism recipes natively. Jade and The One Probe show machine stats in-world. Applied Energistics 2 can connect to Mekanism energy and item networks directly. CraftTweaker and KubeJS allow recipe customization of Mekanism processing chains for modpack builders.
Questions about this entry.
How do I install Mekanism?
Download the Mekanism JAR for your Minecraft version from Modrinth, place it in your .minecraft/mods folder, and launch with Forge or NeoForge installed. No library mods are required. Optional companion modules (Generators, Tools, Defense) are separate downloads on the same Modrinth page.
Does Mekanism work with Fabric?
No. Mekanism runs only on Forge and NeoForge. No Fabric port exists. Players looking for tech features on Fabric can explore Create or Applied Energistics 2, both of which support the Fabric loader.
Which Minecraft versions does Mekanism support?
Mekanism has releases for 1.7.10, 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2, and 1.20.1 on Forge, and 1.21.1 on NeoForge. The actively maintained branch is 1.21.1 NeoForge. Older builds remain available on the Modrinth project page.
Does Mekanism work on multiplayer servers?
Yes. Mekanism requires installation on both the client and the server. Machines, cables, and energy networks are fully functional in multiplayer, including cross-dimensional Quantum Entangloporter links between server dimensions.
Will Mekanism corrupt my world if I remove it?
Removing Mekanism from an active world will delete all Mekanism blocks and stored items in loaded chunks. Always back up your world before uninstalling or switching mod versions. Downgrading to an incompatible build can also cause chunk errors.
