Sophisticated Storage replaces vanilla chests, barrels, and shulker boxes with a five-tier upgrade system that scales from copper to netherite. Each tier adds inventory slots and upgrade slots. A Storage Controller unifies nearby blocks into one searchable multiblock inventory, while a deep library of functional upgrades adds automation ranging from item pickup and filtering to in-block smelting. The mod runs on Forge and NeoForge only and requires the companion library Sophisticated Core.

Storage tiers and block types

All four storage block types share the same tier ladder: base, copper, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite. Barrels and chests are available in every vanilla wood variant, so they blend into any base. Each higher tier increases both the number of inventory rows and the number of upgrade slots available. Shulker boxes at higher tiers additionally allow players to stash items directly by right-clicking the box with an item in hand, without opening the GUI.

Limited Barrels work differently. They hold only one to four distinct item types but allow far larger per-slot stack sizes than vanilla. Higher tiers increase the stack limit rather than adding more slots, making them the go-to block for bulk storage of a single resource. You can interact directly from the front face: right-click to insert or retrieve one item at a time, or hold sneak for full-stack operations.

Color and material customization

The Decoration Table applies a main color and an accent color to any storage block with a live preview before you commit. Barrels support an additional layer of material customization: you can apply block materials to the top, bottom, and sides independently using the seven material slots on the left side of the Decoration Table GUI. For higher-tier Limited Barrels, the inner top accent can be set separately as well.

The Paintbrush carries a saved color or material set out of the Decoration Table and applies it to blocks in the world with a single right-click. Applied to a Controller, the Paintbrush updates every connected storage block at once. Standard crafting-table coloring also works early in a playthrough: dyes placed left of the storage block set the main color, dyes placed right set the accent, and dyes in the same column as the block apply to both.

Storage Controller and multiblock management

Place a Storage Controller and then place storage blocks adjacent to it or adjacent to any already-connected block. The network extends up to 15 blocks in any direction from the Controller. For blocks outside that direct chain, place a Storage Link on any face of the target block and use the Storage Tool to link it back to the Controller. The Storage Tool also handles locking blocks to restrict piped input, toggling tier/upgrade visibility, and bulk-applying settings across all connected blocks.

  • Right-click the Controller with items in hand to deposit matching stacks into connected blocks.
  • Double right-click the Controller to sweep all matching stacks from your inventory at once.
  • Storage Input block: accepts piped insertion but does not expose items for extraction, reducing slot iteration overhead on nearly-full networks.
  • Storage Output block: allows extraction only, ideal for output chutes in automated farms.
  • Storage I/O block: supports both insertion and extraction from a single face.

Upgrades: automation and filtering

Upgrades insert directly into a storage block's upgrade slots via the GUI or by right-clicking the block while holding the upgrade. Most upgrades come in a standard and an advanced variant. Advanced versions double the filter slot count and add tag-based, mod-based, NBT, and damage-value matching.

  • Pickup Upgrade: pulls items that touch the block and match the filter into its inventory.
  • Magnet Upgrade: teleports filtered items from a radius around the block directly into it.
  • Filter Upgrade: restricts what can be piped in or out via hoppers or mod automation pipes.
  • Void Upgrade: destroys filtered items as they are inserted, keeping the block from filling up.
  • Compacting Upgrade: automatically compacts items using 2x2 or 3x3 crafting recipes, such as combining nine ingots into a storage block.
  • Feeding Upgrade: feeds the player food items from the block when hunger drops, with filters to avoid rotten flesh or items with negative effects.
  • Smelting, Smoking, and Blasting Upgrades: embed a furnace inside the storage block, with auto-smelting variants that pull fuel, smelt matched items, and deposit the results back automatically.

How to install Sophisticated Storage

  1. 1.Install Forge or NeoForge for your Minecraft version (1.18.2 through 1.21.11 are supported).

Questions about this entry.

  • Does Sophisticated Storage work with Fabric?

No. Sophisticated Storage requires Forge or NeoForge. There is no Fabric or Quilt build available. If you play on a Fabric instance, Storage Drawers is a popular alternative that supports Fabric and covers many similar use cases.

  • What is Sophisticated Core and do I need it?

Sophisticated Core is a required library mod by the same creator, P3pp3rF1y. Sophisticated Storage will not load without it. Download Sophisticated Core separately from Modrinth or CurseForge and place it in your mods folder alongside Sophisticated Storage.

  • How do I connect multiple chests or barrels to a Storage Controller?

Place storage blocks adjacent to the Controller or chain them together within a 15-block radius. For blocks outside that chain, place a Storage Link on the target block and use the Storage Tool to link it to the Controller. Once connected, right-click the Controller to deposit matching items from your inventory.

  • Does Sophisticated Storage work on multiplayer servers?

Yes. The mod runs on both client and server, so all players on the server must have it installed alongside Sophisticated Core. The Storage Controller and all upgrades work in multiplayer without extra configuration.

  • What is the difference between a Limited Barrel and a regular barrel?

A Limited Barrel holds only one to four distinct item types but supports much larger per-slot stack sizes than a regular barrel. Higher tiers increase the stack limit instead of adding slots, making Limited Barrels ideal for mass storage of a single material like cobblestone, sand, or logs.
