Modern UI is a Minecraft Java mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt that adds a text layout engine and a set of screen and window tweaks. It is required on the client and unsupported on a dedicated multiplayer host. It also provides a Modding API for building graphical interfaces in Minecraft.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.1.2. The newest build requires Forge Config API Port, optionally Fabric API.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.18.1 to 26.1.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.1.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- Quilt: Minecraft 1.20 to 1.21.3. The newest build requires Forge Config API Port, optionally Fabric API.
What the text engine changes
The engine handles Unicode text so that vanilla screens and mods built on the vanilla GUI get sharper, more readable text at any scale, in 2D and in the 3D world. It works with Sodium and Oculus, and the pack also lists OptiFine as compatible.
- TrueType and OpenType fonts with live preview and reload, plus a better font fallback.
- Google Noto Color Emoji and emoji shortcodes in chat, such as , for Discord and Slack style names.
- Anti-aliasing, FreeType hinting and distance field text for signs and small labels.
- Configurable bidirectional text, text shadow and font base size.
- Compatibility with Minecraft's own JSON font definitions.
Extras beyond text
By default, Ctrl+K (⌘+K on Mac) opens the Action Center screen to configure Modern UI. Swipe the Preferences screen to configure fonts. The extras are small but numerous.
- Gaussian blur and a fade-in on screen backgrounds, with a changeable background colour.
- Borderless fullscreen and maximized window modes, with a framerate limit and volume fade when the window loses focus.
- A GUI scale slider, a zoom on the C key, and undo and redo in text fields.
- Tooltips with rounded or shadowed borders, line wrapping, gradient colours and pixel-aligned movement.
- A local music player with seeking and a spectrum view.
Installation
- 1.Install the loader that matches your Minecraft release, using the guide for Fabric or Forge and NeoForge.
- 2.Add the mod file, and any library the list above names for your loader, to the mods folder.
- 3.Launch the loader profile and press Ctrl+K to configure.
Questions about Modern UI.
5 questions
How do I open the Modern UI settings?
Press Ctrl+K, or ⌘+K on a Mac, by default to open the Action Center screen. That is where the options are configured.
Does Modern UI work on multiplayer servers?
Modern UI is required on the client and is not supported on a dedicated multiplayer host, so do not add it there. Its features are all on the player's side: text rendering, screen backgrounds, window modes, tooltips and the other tweaks described on this page.
Is Modern UI compatible with Sodium and Iris?
The mod lists compatibility with OptiFine, Sodium (Rubidium) and Iris (Oculus), along with many other mods. It is also listed as compatible with Minecraft's JSON font definitions, including bitmap fonts and TTF fonts. On Fabric and Quilt, check the loaders list above for the library it needs before you launch.
How do I remove Modern UI if I do not want it?
Close Minecraft and delete the Modern UI file from the mods folder. Because the mod is client-side and changes how text and screens look and behave, removal happens on the player's side only. Remove any library you added only for it if you no longer need that library.
What is the difference between Modern UI and Modern UI for Minecraft?
This page covers Modern UI for Minecraft, the mod credited here to BloCamLimb. It is based on the Modern UI Core Framework, a desktop application framework for standalone 2D and 3D rendering software that is credited to Icyllis Milica. The mod supplies the bootstrap program that runs that framework inside Minecraft, along with the text engine and screen tweaks described here.
