ChestShop turns any chest with a sign on one of its sides into a player-run shop, letting a buyer and seller trade items for currency without a GUI or a separate claim plugin. It runs on Paper, Spigot, Purpur, and Folia servers and needs a Vault or Reserve-compatible economy plugin to actually move the money. Originally released in 2011, ChestShop is now maintained by the ChestShop-authors project.

How the sign shop mechanic works

Every ChestShop is a chest with a sign attached to one of its sides. The sign's four lines set who owns the shop, how many items trade per click, the price, and which item is for sale.

  1. 1.First line: leave it empty and the plugin fills in your name, or write another player's name if you hold the ChestShop.admin permission.
  2. 2.Second line: the quantity of the item that trades per click.
  3. 3.Third line: a price code using B for the buy price and S for the sell price, separated by a colon, for example "B 5:5 S".
  4. 4.Fourth line: the item's name, or a question mark to auto-fill it from whatever is already in the chest.

Right-click the finished sign to buy from the shop, and left-click to sell into it. Writing "Admin Shop" on the first line creates an unlimited shop that does not need a chest to stay stocked.

Installing ChestShop and its economy dependency

Drop the ChestShop jar into the server's plugins folder and restart. ChestShop does not process currency on its own: it needs Vault, or the Reserve API on versions from 3.9.2 onward, paired with a compatible economy plugin such as EssentialsX before shop signs can charge or pay players.

Supported server software and current version ceiling

ChestShop's last stable release, 3.12.2 from February 2023, covers Paper, Spigot, and Purpur through Minecraft 1.19.3. A pre-release build, 3.13-pre-1 from July 2026, extends support to Minecraft 26.2 across Paper, Spigot, and Purpur, and adds Folia support for the first time.

ChestShop versus other shop plugins

ChestShop is the original sign-and-chest shop plugin, first released in 2011. Searchers sometimes land on QuickShop-Hikari instead, a separate, unrelated plugin with its own menu-driven design that markets itself as a ChestShop alternative. ChestShop shops are built entirely from signs and chests placed in the world, while QuickShop-Hikari leans on in-game menus and shop items, so pick the one that matches how you want players to trade.

Compatibility with claim and permission plugins

ChestShop hooks directly into several protection plugins so shop chests and signs are not blocked by claims or region rules.

  • WorldGuard region protection.
  • GriefPrevention claims.
  • AuthMe and AuthMe Reloaded, PlotSquared, Residence, LWC and its forks, Lockette, LockettePro, BlockLocker, and Deadbolt.

Questions about ChestShop.

5 questions

How do I create a shop with ChestShop?

Place a chest, then place a sign on one of its sides. Leave the first line blank to auto-fill your name, put the quantity on the second line, a price code like "B 5:5 S" on the third, and the item name or a question mark on the fourth. Right-click the finished sign to buy, and left-click to sell.

Does ChestShop need Vault?

Yes, in most setups. ChestShop does not track currency itself, so it moves money through Vault, or on versions after 3.9.2 the Reserve API, paired with a compatible economy plugin such as EssentialsX. Without one of those installed, ChestShop shops cannot charge or pay players.

Which Minecraft version does ChestShop support?

The stable 3.12.2 release covers Paper, Spigot, and Purpur through Minecraft 1.19.3. A newer 3.13 pre-release build extends that ceiling to Minecraft 26.2 and adds Folia support, but it ships on the pre-release channel rather than as a numbered stable build.

Is ChestShop the same plugin as QuickShop?

No. ChestShop and QuickShop-Hikari are separate, unrelated plugins that both let players run item shops. ChestShop uses only chests and signs placed in the world, while QuickShop-Hikari is built around menus and shop items, so pick the one that matches how you want players to trade.

Does ChestShop work on Folia?

Yes, as of the 3.13 pre-release build published in July 2026, which added Folia support alongside the existing Paper, Spigot, and Purpur targets. That build sits on the pre-release channel rather than a numbered stable release, so back up a live server before switching to it.
