Nostalgia Ultra is a fantasy-leaning, realistic shader pack for Java that recreates the look of Beta 1.7 through 1.5.2 in 4K. It runs on Iris and OptiFine, and maxlananass positions it as a low-impact pack. It applies on the player's own machine only, so it is not supported on dedicated multiplayer hosts.
Shader loaders and versions
- Iris and OptiFine: Minecraft 1.16 to 1.21.11. The newest build requires Iris Shaders; some builds for 1.21 to 1.21.11 need no dependencies.
What it changes
This is not a colour filter. Each shader pass was written to match the 2011 to 2013 era, then rebuilt with modern lighting, shadow mapping and water. Colour grading runs warm, with boosted midtones and slightly oversaturated greens and blues.
- Water: turquoise and translucent, with animated waves, screen-space reflections, caustics, shore foam and a depth gradient from bright shallows to deep blue.
- Sky: a large sun with a warm halo, a dense night star field, layered sunrise and sunset gradients, and cold blue moonlight.
- Lighting: soft shadow edges, volumetric godrays and deep orange torchlight.
- Dimensions: a heavy blood-red fog in the Nether, and a cold purple-black void in the End with fixed stars.
- Optional CRT effect with scanlines, screen curvature and slight chromatic aberration at the edges.
Settings and performance
An in-game panel covers Style, Water, Sky, Lighting and Effects, so nothing needs a hand-edited config file. It is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. The creator profiled every pass on Iris with Sodium on mid-range hardware and reports 60+ FPS at 4K on a GTX 1070 or RX 580. Weaker GPUs can lower shadow quality and godray resolution. Vanilla textures give the most authentic result, though any resource pack works.
Installation
- 1.Install Iris Shaders. On Fabric it bundles Sodium, so do not add Sodium separately.
- 2.Put Nostalgia-Ultra.zip in your shaderpacks folder.
- 3.Open Options, then Video Settings, then Shader Packs, and select Nostalgia Ultra.
Bedrock cannot run this pack.

Questions about Nostalgia Ultra.
4 questions
How do I install Nostalgia Ultra?
Install Iris Shaders first, then place Nostalgia-Ultra.zip in your shaderpacks folder. Open Options, then Video Settings, then Shader Packs, and pick Nostalgia Ultra from the list. On Fabric, Iris bundles Sodium, so you should not add it as a separate mod.
Does Nostalgia Ultra work with both Iris and OptiFine?
Yes. Builds are listed for both Iris and OptiFine, covering 1.16 to 1.21.11. The creator targeted Iris from the start and profiled the pack there, so Iris is the better-supported route if you are unsure which loader to use.
Is Nostalgia Ultra good for low-end PCs?
It is listed as a low-impact pack. The creator reports 60+ FPS at 4K on a GTX 1070 or RX 580, and says weaker GPUs can reduce shadow quality and godray resolution in the settings. Those figures come from the creator's own profiling, not a guarantee.
Does Nostalgia Ultra work on Bedrock?
No. Iris and OptiFine are Java mods, and Bedrock cannot run them. This shader pack is for Java only.
