retroview is a retro shader pack for Java that lays a pixelated, console-style screen look over the world. It runs through Iris Shaders and works on the player's side only. It is lightweight by design, which makes it a fair pick for lower-end PCs.
Shader loaders and versions
- Iris: Minecraft 1.16.5 to 26.3. The newest build requires Iris Shaders, optionally Sodium; some builds for 1.16.5 to 26.2 require Fabric API and Iris Shaders; some builds for 1.16.5 to 26.1.2 need no dependencies; some builds for 1.21.5 to 26.1.1 require Sodium, Fabric API and Iris Shaders.
What retroview changes
This is a filter, not a lighting overhaul. Everything on screen takes on a classic retro, pixelated feel, while blocks, mobs and mechanics stay exactly as they are. It sits on top of vanilla visuals or your favorite resource packs, so a texture pack you already like keeps its identity and simply gains a nostalgic screen treatment.
- Retro screen look with a pixelated, console feel
- Low performance cost, positioned for lower-end hardware
- Works with vanilla and most resource packs
- Suited to screenshots, videos and worlds that need a different mood
Installing retroview
- 1.Install Iris Shaders for your Java setup. Sodium is optional with the newest release.
- 2.Place the retroview .zip in the shaderpacks folder.
- 3.Open Video Settings, then Shader Packs, and select retroview.
If the pack does not appear or the screen stays vanilla, the shader troubleshooting guide covers the usual causes.
Trade-offs
The pack is a solo passion project by Project516, first published in 2026 and updated since. The trade is simple: a small, quick, charming filter in exchange for fewer effects than the large shader packs offer.
Questions about retroview.
4 questions
How do I install retroview?
Install Iris Shaders, put the retroview .zip into the shaderpacks folder, then open Video Settings and choose Shader Packs. Select retroview from the list and apply it. Sodium is optional with the newest release, so you can add it if you already use it.
Is retroview good for low-end PCs?
retroview is positioned as extremely lightweight, and Modrinth tags it as low impact. It is a retro screen filter rather than a heavy lighting and shadow pipeline, so it should cost little. Actual frame rates still depend on your hardware and other mods.
Does retroview work on Bedrock?
No. retroview is a Java shader pack that depends on Iris, and Iris cannot run on Bedrock. Bedrock uses a different pack format, so this pack will not load there.
Does retroview add new blocks or mechanics?
No. It changes only how the screen looks, with a retro, pixelated filter over the normal world. Blocks, mobs and gameplay stay the same, and it works with vanilla visuals and most resource packs.
