Ten adventure modpacks for Minecraft Java Edition, taken from the 21 adventure pages in our modpack index and sorted by Modrinth downloads. Better MC is the most downloaded and the one that adds new dungeons and bosses to a Vanilla+ base. Prominence II is the pick with a story campaign and a talent tree. Cave Horror Project 1 is the most downloaded of three horror packs here. All ten are Java only.

How we picked these adventure modpacks

We chose from 21 Java adventure modpack pages in our catalogue. Eighteen have a Modrinth download count, read on 7 October 2026. We left out the three Cobblemon Pokémon packs, the two SkyBlock packs, SuperHeroes and Homestead because they are not built around exploration, dungeons and bosses, and the three packs from other sources that carry no count. The ten most downloaded of what remained are below, sorted by that count. Completecraft, with 574 downloads, fell outside the ten. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them, downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score. For general-purpose packs, see the most downloaded modpacks overall.

Modpacks built around exploration

These three change the world you walk through, or how far you can see it, more than they change the fights.

Landscapes Reimagined Genesis

Landscapes Reimagined Genesis

@M0nkeyPr0grammer · Modpack

JavaFabricv 1.19.2 to 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this one if terrain and structures are the draw. Its Modrinth page lists Terralith alongside YUNG's, MES and MVS structures, and describes a Create and Vanilla Plus style pack with a questline. It runs on Fabric only. The trade-offs are age and terms: the newest release dates from August 2024, and the repository licence is All Rights Reserved with streaming and recording permissions but no editing, so do not expect to remix it. Create is part of the mix, so it is not a pure exploration pack.

RealisticCraft

RealisticCraft

@brynblack · Modpack

JavaFabricv 1.19 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Choose it for a slower, survival-leaning way to explore. The page lists a thirst and warmth system, redesigned combat and atmospheric sound design, and says it does this without drastically changing the underlying gameplay. Its credits name Terralith, Tectonic and Distant Horizons among the mods. It is Fabric only. The newest file is tagged alpha (1.2.0-alpha2, April 2026), so treat it as unfinished by its own tag. The source repository carries an MIT licence.

Mine In Abyss Modpack

Mine In Abyss Modpack

@MineInAbyss · Modpack

JavaFabricv 1.20.4 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

This is the odd one out: an optional companion to the Mine In Abyss server, not a standalone world. Its page promises a higher render distance through a custom fork of Voxy, which it says shows over 7000 blocks up and down. It is Fabric only, the client needs it, and the server side is listed as unsupported. The page says a vanilla client can join that server without the pack. Voxy has no shader support, though the page says shaders such as Complementary Unbound do work. The newest file is tagged beta.

Modpacks with dungeons and bosses

Four packs put structures, bosses or both at the centre. For loose mod picks in the same vein, see the most downloaded adventure mods.

Better MC (BMC2)

Better MC [FABRIC] - BMC2

@Luna Pixel Studios · Modpack

JavaFabricv 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Pick it for the biggest dungeon and boss kit in this list. Its page names When Dungeons Arise and AdoraBuild Structures for dungeons, Bosses of Mass Destruction and Frostiful for new bosses, plus 100+ quests, overhauled strongholds and fortresses, and shader support. It is Fabric only and carries 280+ mods, so a lot changes at once. Multiplayer needs the pack on both client and server, and the Modrinth licence label is All Rights Reserved.

Vanilla Perfected

Vanilla Perfected

@demonjoeTV · Modpack

JavaFabricv 1.20.1 to 26.1.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick it to keep the feel of the base game. Its page lists structures inspired by Minecraft Dungeons, mob animations, an updated HUD and UI, and what it calls drastically increased FPS. It also uses a Vanilla Tweaks resource pack with that team's permission. The creator, demonJoeTV, says the list is simply what he likes to use in his videos, so this is one player's taste, not a boss-focused design. It is Fabric only. The licence label is MIT, but no source repository is linked, and the newest file is tagged beta.

Prominence II Hasturian Era

Prominence II Hasturian Era

@ElocinDev · Modpack

JavaFabricv 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Pick it if you want an RPG with a plot rather than Vanilla+. Its page describes two storylines, a Talent Tree with 10 fates, 16 passive talents, 5 active abilities and 100 stat talents, and timed Mythic boss encounters that unlock after Chapter II of the Hasturian Era. It was updated on 2 October 2026. The trade-off is distance from vanilla: it is built on custom content with its own lore, runs on Fabric only, and needs the pack on both client and server.

Aged

Aged

@xR4YM0ND · Modpack

JavaFabricv 1.19.2 to 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Pick it for a challenging medieval survival loop where exploring pays in experience. The page lists hydration, temperature, seasons, skills, jobs and more than six unique boss fights, and says mobs get stronger the further you go. It is Fabric only. The page says it has been built for singleplayer since v3.0.0, though it can be run from server files, and its known-bugs list includes an enchanting table crash. The last update was 1 December 2024. The source is on GitHub under MIT.

Horror and atmosphere modpacks

All three horror packs here run on Forge, and each sells fear as the adventure.

Cave Horror Project 1

Cave Horror Project 1

@JustErikSK · Modpack

JavaForgev 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Pick it for a horror campaign you can play with friends. The page lists over 200 quests across chapters, Herobrine events, bosses from the ArPhEx mod, and Simple Voice Chat paired with a radio mod for in-world walkie-talkies. It runs on Forge, not Fabric, and the Modrinth licence label is All Rights Reserved. Client and server both need the pack, and it describes itself as horror survival, so it is not a calm exploration pick.

The Horrors in the Fog

The Horrors in the Fog

@theernyclan · Modpack

JavaForgev 1.19.2 to 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Pick it for jumpscare-driven horror built from well-known horror mods. Its page names From The Fog (the Herobrine mod), The Midnight Lurker, The Better Cave Dweller, Sanity: Descent Into Madness and Doctor Who: Weeping Angels, and suggests playing with friends. It is Forge only. The newest release dates from October 2024, and the Modrinth licence label is GPL-3.0-only even though no source repository is linked.

From the Caves

From the Caves

@qxdFox · Modpack

JavaForgev 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Pick it for a narrow, single-monster horror run. It centres on one stalking entity from the From the Caves mod, governed by a four-phase system, and its page gives the command /fromthecaves photosensitiveMode to switch off the flashing effects. It runs on Forge. The trade-off is scale: 72,247 downloads, 13 followers and three releases listed on Modrinth, with a feature set that is one mod deep.

What to check before you install one

  • Loader. Seven of the ten run on Fabric and three on Forge, and none lists NeoForge. Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge explains what that means for the rest of your mods.
  • Minecraft release. Only Vanilla Perfected, RealisticCraft and Mine In Abyss go past 1.20.1, so the rest suit you only if you are happy on that older release.
  • Side. Nine list client and server as required. Mine In Abyss lists the server as unsupported. For group play, see multiplayer modpacks for friends.
  • Last update. Aged, Landscapes Reimagined Genesis and The Horrors in the Fog were last updated in 2024, so check that nothing newer in your mod list needs them to move.
  • Licence. Labels range from MIT to All Rights Reserved, and only some packs link a repository with a licence file.

The deciding fact is usually the release: if you want a recent Minecraft, Vanilla Perfected is the only one of the ten with a 26.2 file. If the release does not matter, choose by what you want to fight or fear.

Installing an adventure modpack

Each pack is a Modrinth modpack that a launcher importing .mrpack files, such as the Modrinth App or Prism Launcher, installs with the right loader; the steps are in how to install a modpack. Everything we left out is on the modpack listing.
