Pick Reimagined if you want shaders that keep the vanilla look. Pick Unbound if you want a more realistic image. In the Complementary Reimagined vs Unbound choice, the creator says the only difference is the default settings.

What Reimagined and Unbound share
Both are styles of Complementary Shaders, made by EminGT. Both Modrinth pages were first published on 22 December 2022 and last updated on 15 September 2026. The pack says it started in 2018 as an edit of BSL Shaders and was later rewritten.
Both need a shader loader, Iris or OptiFine, and both list builds for each. Iris and OptiFine are Java Edition mods, so neither style runs on Bedrock Edition. The newest build of each lists no required dependencies. Our shader install guide covers the setup once for either style.
How the two styles look
We read the creator's descriptions and did not run either style, so we describe the stated aims and not rendered images. Because only the default settings differ, the gap is smaller than between two separate packs.
Reimagined
Complementary Reimagined Shaders
@EminGT · Shader
Checked Source and install notes
The creator describes Reimagined as focused on preserving the unique visual elements of the game and providing a reworked vanilla feel. Modrinth tags it vanilla-like. Its site says you can still switch settings, for example to realistic water.
Unbound
Complementary Shaders - Unbound
@EminGT · Shader
Checked Source and install notes
The creator calls Unbound the less restricted style, aiming for a more realistic image. Modrinth tags it semi-realistic.
Performance cost and profiles
Both pages describe the pack as having top tier optimisation and profiles ranging from Potato to Ultra. That is the creator's own wording, and we did not measure it. Modrinth lists the potato, low, medium and high tags on both styles.
We give no frame rate numbers because none are sourced. Nothing we read says one style costs more than the other. If a style runs badly, see our guide to fixing lag and boosting FPS or how to allocate more RAM.
Settings and customisation
The creator states that everything can be customised after you install either style, and that all settings sit in Shader Options. Styles are starting points, not locked modes. The practical consequence is that a wrong first pick costs a settings change or a swap of the pack file, not a different engine.
We have not compared the two sets of defaults value by value, because the sources describe them only in general terms. If a setting does not seem to apply, our shaders not working fix is the place to start.
Which hardware suits each one
The sources do not tie either style to a hardware tier. For a wider look at what players install, see our list of most downloaded shaders on Modrinth.
When the choice is already made for you
Loader does not decide it, since both styles list Iris and OptiFine builds. The newest build of both reaches 26.3. The one place the lists differ is the oldest version, 1.7.2 for Unbound and 1.7.10 for Reimagined, so on a very old version check the build list for your exact release.
Trade-offs of each style
- Reimagined keeps closer to the vanilla look by design. The price is a less realistic image by default, which Unbound targets.
- Unbound aims for realism by default. The price is a look further from vanilla unless you change its settings.
Which one to choose
Choose Unbound if you want realism out of the box. Since both are the same pack with different defaults, you can try one, then the other, without changing loader.
