The most downloaded Minecraft shaders for Java Edition are the two Complementary styles, Reimagined and Unbound, followed by BSL Shaders, going by Modrinth counts read on 2 October 2026. Complementary Reimagined is for players who want a reworked vanilla look, and BSL Shaders calls itself bright, colorful and distinct. Every pack below lists Iris builds. Everything else we list is on Minecraft Shaders.

How we picked these shader packs

We chose from the 53 shader pages we list, sorted by Modrinth downloads read on 2 October 2026, Java Edition only, and took the top twelve. We left Euphoria Patches (28,079,032 downloads) out of the twelve, so the list continues down to the 13th most downloaded. We did not benchmark or play-test any of these, downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score.

Complementary Reimagined Shaders

Complementary Reimagined Shaders

@EminGT · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.7.10 to 26.3

Checked Source and install notes

This is the pick for a reworked vanilla feel. Its own page says Reimagined preserves the unique visual elements of Minecraft, and lists profiles from Potato to Ultra. It started in 2018 as an edit of BSL Shaders and EminGT still maintains it. The trade-off is the licence: it is the custom Complementary License Agreement 1.7, so the source is readable but it is not an open licence. Its page also points to a separate Complementary Installer, which does the loader steps for you.

Complementary Shaders - Unbound

Complementary Shaders - Unbound

@EminGT · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.7.10 to 1.21.1

Checked Source and install notes

Unbound is the same Complementary r5 pack with a different set of default settings, aimed by its page at a more realistic image. Pick it if you want that look from the first launch. The limit is that it is not a separate engine: the page says the two styles differ only in defaults, and everything can be changed in Shader Options. If you already run Reimagined, you can reach most of Unbound's look without a second pack.

BSL Shaders

BSL Shaders

@CaptTatsu · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.8 to 1.21.1

Checked Source and install notes

BSL suits players who want a long feature list and plenty to switch on. Its page lists realtime shadows, volumetric light, ambient occlusion, bloom and built-in anti-aliasing, plus optional depth of field, motion blur and cel shading. CaptTatsu's pack is the base that Complementary and Insanity grew from. The trade-off is the licence: Modrinth lists it as all rights reserved, no source repository is linked, and the page forbids redistribution without permission.

Photon Shaders

Photon Shaders

@sixthsurge · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.16.5 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Photon is a gameplay-focused, semi-realistic pack from sixthsurge, with volumetric fog, screen-space reflections and soft shadows. Its page says to use Iris, because coloured lighting only works there, and it adds that voxel-based coloured lighting is switched on with the Ultra profile. The limit to know first is hardware: the page states it is not compatible with Apple GPUs (Metal). It lists Voxy and Distant Horizons as supported mods.

Solas Shader

Solas Shader

@Septonious · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.12 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Solas is a fantasy-stylized pack by Septonious with coloured block lighting, auroras, 3D clouds and an integrated PBR resource pack. Choose it if you want a stylized sky and have Iris, which the page calls the preferred loader. On OptiFine, the page says custom skyboxes and coloured block lighting are not supported, which removes much of the reason to pick it. The licence is all rights reserved, with the full terms in the repository.

Bliss Shaders

Bliss Shaders

@X0nk · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.20.1 to 1.21.8

Checked Source and install notes

Bliss is a large edit of Chocapic13's shaders by Xonk, built around varied scenes and heavy customisation. Pick it if you like the Chocapic style but want coloured lighting. Its page requires Iris and says OptiFine might work, so treat OptiFine as unconfirmed. Apple devices have limited support because of OpenGL restrictions. Only five releases are listed, and the newest is 2.1.2, so updates are slower than for the Complementary packs.

Rethinking Voxels

Rethinking Voxels

@gri573 · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.20.1 to 1.21.10

Checked Source and install notes

Rethinking Voxels is gri573's edit of Complementary Reimagined, aimed at coloured block lights that cast sharp shadows at a speed its page calls decent compared with path tracing shaders. It is the only pack here whose Modrinth summary still says work in progress, and the newest release is a beta. Iris is required: OptiFine builds stopped at 1.19.4, and only beta 18d and older work there. The page admits occasional sudden brightness changes from its lighting system.

MakeUp - Ultra Fast

MakeUp - Ultra Fast

@KDXavier · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.12.2 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

MakeUp is for players who want to choose which effects cost anything. Its page says all effects are optional and you only pay for the ones you switch on, and it lists several colour schemes. Its licence is LGPL-3.0-or-later, with source on GitHub. The trade-off is that you do the tuning: the page names shadows and depth of field as resource-intensive and suggests removing them for speed.

Super Duper Vanilla

Super Duper Vanilla

@Eldeston (FlameRender Studios) · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.18.2 to 1.21.8

Checked Source and install notes

Super Duper Vanilla aims at the style of the cancelled Super Duper Graphics Pack, which suits players who want a clean, vanilla-adjacent look. The limit is OptiFine: its page says OptiFine support is neither prioritised nor maintained from release 1.3.7, and lists only partial support there. It marks Iris 1.18.2 and later as supported on Windows, Linux and Apple M1. The licence is the FlameRender Studios License, with all rights reserved unless stated.

Insanity Shader

Insanity Shader

@ElocinDev · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.20.6 to 1.21.3

Checked Source and install notes

Insanity is a horror-themed pack by ElocinDev, based on BSL and made for the Fear Nightfall modpack. Its page promises a dark Nether and End, and says the pack is made for horror modpacks. The trade-off is age: the newest release dates from 13 June 2024 and its listed range stops at 1.21.3, so it does not list any 26.x release. It has no linked source repository, and its page asks you to share the Modrinth link rather than the files.

Mellow Shaders

Mellow Shaders

@TheCMK · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.8.9 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Mellow is a painterly pack by TheCMK for people who want to play rather than screenshot. Its page lists several colour schemes, a customisable fog system, and support for Distant Horizons, Voxy and Colorwheel. Modrinth labels it MIT, but no licence file was found in a source repository, and its source is linked on Codeberg. The page says Macs may or may not work, and that OptiFine has some small bugs.

AstraLex Shaders

AstraLex Shaders

@LexBoosT · Shader

JavaIris, OptiFinev 1.16.5 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

AstraLex is for players who enjoy a long effects list. Its page names constellations, shooting stars, a Majora's Mask moon, CRT effects and screen raindrops, besides the usual shadows and bloom. It suits tinkerers more than anyone wanting a quick default. The limits are licensing and upkeep: all rights reserved, redistribution only with permission, no source repository, and the newest release, 93.0, dates from 16 June 2024.

What shaders need to run on Java

Every pack above needs a shader loader: Iris on Fabric or NeoForge, or OptiFine. Iris and OptiFine are Java Edition mods, so none of this runs on Bedrock. The packs run on the player's side only, and Modrinth lists no server support for any of them. If you are starting from nothing, how to install Minecraft shaders covers the loader and the shaderpacks folder, and fix Minecraft shaders not working covers the usual failures.

What the pages say about performance cost

We did not measure frame rates, so this is only what the pages claim. Complementary's page says top tier optimisation, Solas says a moderate performance cost, Insanity says it is optimised even for low end GPUs, and Mellow's summary says it is easy on your computer. Bliss's Modrinth summary calls it well performing, and Rethinking Voxels says it aims to be decently fast. MakeUp says it aims at a strong ratio of quality to performance, with every effect optional. BSL, Photon, Super Duper Vanilla and AstraLex make no cost claim on their pages. Photon does list temporal upscaling for low end devices, disabled by default. For general frame-rate help, see how to fix Minecraft lag and boost your FPS.

Which shader pack to try first

Start with your loader and GPU. On OptiFine, avoid Rethinking Voxels, and expect less from Solas and Super Duper Vanilla. On an Apple GPU, check Photon and Bliss first, because their pages flag Apple limits. After that, decide on look: Reimagined for vanilla-like, Unbound for realistic, MakeUp if you want to trim effects. Check the last-update column too, since Insanity and AstraLex have not changed since mid-2024. For everything we left out, see every shader we list.
