What Mojang Has Announced About the Next Minecraft Drop

Mojang has announced no release date for the next Minecraft drop. The only official look so far came at Minecraft Live on 26 September 2026: ice caves with icicles and ice crystals, plus a frozen zombie variant. Wilderness Bound, the previous drop, is already out on Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

What Mojang has announced about the next drop

Mojang's Minecraft Live page calls the September show "the first look at our next game drop" and promises "chilly features": ice caves filled with glittering icicles and a frozen zombie variant. The same page answers "What is the new Minecraft Update?" with "Tune in to Minecraft LIVE to find out!" It gives no name, number or date for the drop.

What Minecraft Live in September 2026 showed

The recap on minecraft.net says the ice caves are a new cave biome, in the family of dripstone, lush and sulfur caves. They hold ice, calcite blocks, icicles that grow from ceilings and ice crystals that grow on the ground and emit a soft light.

The frozen zombie variant has no name yet. According to the recap, its hits deal damage plus a freezing effect, and some variants throw ice balls. Game Director Agnes Larsson reminded viewers that adventure is a main focus of Minecraft's long-term vision.

One more reveal is easy to confuse with the drop. The Sift, a fourth dimension and the first new one in over 14 years, is coming to Java Edition and Bedrock Edition "next year", per the recap. It debuts in Minecraft Dungeons II on 29 September 2026. No date is given for the Minecraft release, and the recap does not tie it to the ice caves drop.

Newest snapshot is a test release

Mojang's Java Edition feed, read 2 October 2026, lists 26.4-snapshot-2 dated 2026-09-29 as the newest test release. A snapshot is not a release, and its contents can change or be dropped before any final release. No Mojang page we read links 26.4-snapshot-2 to the ice caves or names it as the next drop. Our pack holds no Bedrock preview data, so we name none.

Past Java Edition release dates

Mojang's TwitchCon recap calls the dappled forest the biome of "the third drop of 2026", which matches 26.3 landing in September. The gaps between the last three numbered releases are roughly three months. That is a pattern in dates, not a forecast.

What this means for mods and packs today

Nothing changes until a release ships. Loader feeds read on 2 October 2026 show Fabric and Quilt listing 26.3 as stable. NeoForge's newest 26.3 file is 26.3.0.42-beta, and every 26.3 file so far carries its beta label. Forge's latest is 66.0.9 with no recommended file marked. A listed file is not proof that a mod works.

Modrinth's search API shows 6054 Fabric, 3343 NeoForge and 1704 Forge mods listing 26.3, against 12386, 6366 and 3241 for 26.2 on the same day (Modrinth only, CurseForge not counted). Mojang's 26.3 notes set the Data Pack format to 121.0 and the Resource Pack format to 97.1.
