Vibrant Visuals vs shaders for Minecraft Bedrock and Java

Vibrant Visuals is a graphics mode inside Bedrock Edition, while Java Edition gets its looks from shader packs run through Iris or OptiFine. This page sets out devices, features and trade-offs for each.

Published Updated Checked

Vibrant Visuals is a graphics mode built into Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Java Edition has no built-in equivalent yet, so Java players use shaders through Iris or OptiFine. Pick Vibrant Visuals if you play Bedrock on a supported device. Pick shaders if you play Java and want a transformed look today.

What Vibrant Visuals is

Mojang describes Vibrant Visuals as a visual graphics upgrade, revealed at Minecraft LIVE, with directional lighting, volumetric fog, reflective water and shadows cast by every block. The Minecraft Wiki says it runs on the RenderDragon engine with a physically based rendering pipeline and deferred lighting, and that its shadows are pixelated to match the texture grid, unlike most shaders.

On a compatible Bedrock device it is the default graphics mode. The Graphics Mode dropdown in the Create New World and Edit World screens still lets you switch. The Video settings offer Favor Visuals and Favor Performance presets, and a Vibrant Visuals Options section holds finer controls. Marketplace content that is made for it carries a Vibrant Visuals label. The wiki also notes that most configuration and textures can be changed through resource packs.

The wiki treats RTX, the ray tracing graphics mode, as a separate Bedrock mode with its own page. We do not compare it here because the pages we read describe Vibrant Visuals only.

What Java shaders are

A shader pack replaces how Java Edition draws light, shadow and water. Java needs a loader to run one. Iris describes itself as a modern shader loader intended to be compatible with existing OptiFine shader packs. It had 187,351,991 downloads on Modrinth when we read it on 10 October 2026. It is Java only and needed on the player's own machine.

Iris Shaders

Iris builds for Fabric run from 1.16.5 to 26.3, NeoForge from 1.21 to 26.3, and Quilt from 1.16.5 to 1.21.11. The newest build on each loader requires Sodium. The loader choice matters before the pack choice, and our Iris vs Oculus comparison covers the older split.

Three packs we list show the range. Each lists Iris and OptiFine builds from 1.7.10 to 26.3 and needs no extra dependency in its newest build.

BSL lists realtime shadows, volumetric light, ambient occlusion and bloom. Sildur's Vibrant Shaders, despite the name, is an unrelated Java shader pack from a separate creator.

Its page says the medium or high presets should work on a GTX 960. That is the creator's statement, and we did not test it.

Which devices and editions can use each

Vibrant Visuals is Bedrock only. Mojang lists Windows, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Android and iOS. The Minecraft Wiki adds that Nintendo Switch 2 support is in development and has appeared in closed development versions of Bedrock 26.60, but is not released. The wiki also warns that on lower-end devices, especially with high render distance and higher graphics settings, it can lower performance significantly.

Shaders are Java only. Iris and OptiFine cannot run on Bedrock, and a Bedrock player who wants a different look follows our Bedrock shaders guide. If you are unsure which edition you own, Minecraft Java vs Bedrock sets out the split.

What you get from each

Vibrant Visuals gives one look from Mojang, adjustable through presets and options. Mojang says existing lighting mechanics such as mob burning, crop growth and daylight detectors work as before. Players on a Realm can play together whether or not they use it. Splitscreen is not supported, and Minecraft switches to Fancy or Simple rendering when several players join locally.

Shaders give choice. Each pack has its own style, settings and cost, so the look ranges from vanilla-like to heavy realism. The trade is setup: a loader, a dependency on newer Iris builds, and a pack file. Our shader install guide covers the steps, and shaders not working covers the usual failures.

Vibrant Visuals on Java and what Mojang has said

Mojang says it will bring Vibrant Visuals to Java Edition in the future, for players and creators on all Java devices. The Minecraft Wiki says it has not appeared in any Java development versions yet. No release date has been announced.

Mojang's fall update on the road to Java describes the groundwork: moving rendering onto its own thread, separate from the main thread. That work is mostly complete for entities, block entities, particles and the UI, and chunks come next. Mojang says the code changes will affect modders and has opened a feedback channel for resource pack and shader creators. It does not say what happens to existing shader packs, so we make no claim about them. Watch snapshots for the first sign.

When the choice is already made for you

Your edition decides. A Bedrock player on a supported device already has Vibrant Visuals as the default and cannot load Java shaders. A Java player has no Vibrant Visuals to turn on and uses a shader loader. Add-ons and Marketplace content on Bedrock may add the Vibrant Visuals label, while Java players load mods and shaders through Iris. Cross-play does not change this, as Is Minecraft cross platform explains.

Trade-offs of each side

  • Vibrant Visuals needs no setup and does not change gameplay, but it is Bedrock only, has no splitscreen, and can cost performance on lower-end devices.
  • Shaders offer many looks and run on Java today, but need a loader, work only on Java, and some packs carry restrictive terms. BSL and Sildur's Vibrant Shaders list All Rights Reserved on Modrinth and link no source repository.
