Minecraft Education is a special edition of Minecraft made for schools, with lesson tools, classroom controls and sign-in through school Microsoft 365 accounts. It is a separate app from Bedrock Edition and Java Edition. No source we read says whether Bedrock add-ons load in it, so we do not claim they do.
This page rests on Minecraft Education's own pages and its support centre, read on 11 October 2026. We did not install or play it, so everything below is the publisher's description, not our testing.
What Minecraft Education is
Minecraft Education's site calls it an immersive learning platform for the classroom, built on the standard game and trusted by schools worldwide. It says more than 40,000 school systems across 140 countries use it. Its own pages describe teaching tools, a library of over 600 standards-aligned lessons, multiplayer for class projects and accessibility features. These are the publisher's claims about itself, and we did not check them.
Who can use Minecraft Education
The target users are schools, but the pages also name camps, clubs, after-school programs, nonprofits and homeschool organizations. Licensing is by yearly subscription. Students and teachers sign in with school emails, and many schools already hold access through their Microsoft Education licence, according to the families page of 26 August 2025.
Families without a school licence have two routes on that page. One is an individual licence for home use. The other is that some Minecraft Education worlds, such as Fantastic Fairgrounds and CyberSafe AI: Dig Deeper, are listed for Bedrock through the Marketplace. The download page also offers a free trial and sample lessons. For the price of standard Minecraft, see Is Minecraft free.
How Minecraft Education differs from Bedrock Edition
The families page names three differences: lesson plans with built-in assessment tools, classroom safety features such as privacy settings and communication filters, and multiplayer that lets a teacher join the world and guide students. It says students can only play with others from their school or district, and that there are no in-game purchases, advertisements or product placements. Teachers can also turn off combat.
Education also has its own Classroom Mode, listed for Windows and Mac only, and dedicated servers for large-scale multiplayer. The pages do not compare it line by line with Bedrock. For the two consumer editions, read Minecraft Java vs Bedrock Edition.
Which devices run Minecraft Education
The support centre lists Chromebook, iPad, Mac, PC and Android and iOS phones. The table gives the minimum operating system for each.
| Device | Minimum supported OS |
|---|---|
| Chromebook | Chrome OS 114 |
| Mac | MacOS 14 |
| PC | Windows 11 (64-bit) or Windows 10 (64-bit) |
| Android phone or tablet | Android 8 |
| iPhone or iPad | iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 |
Two limits matter. Linux is not supported, and emulators do not count as a supported route. Chromebook and Android devices must support Google Play Services, so ChromeOS Flex and Amazon FireOS are not supported. A change dated 17 February 2026 removed Windows 32-bit support and said minimum and recommended memory would rise. The page lists 2 GB RAM as the PC-class minimum and 8 GB as recommended. For standard Minecraft on PC, see Minecraft system requirements.
Do Bedrock add-ons and packs work on Minecraft Education
The sources do not say. They describe Education's own lessons and worlds and never mention loading Bedrock add-ons, behavior packs or resource packs. We found nothing to confirm or rule out a route, and we did not try one.
What is established is narrower. Add-ons are made for Bedrock Edition, and Java Edition cannot load them. If you want add-ons, the route we can describe is regular Bedrock, covered in What Minecraft add-ons are on Bedrock Edition and how to install add-ons on Bedrock. Our add-on listing is written for that edition. Pages in it should not be read as a promise that they work on Education.
What families and students should know
Education's own page calls it very safe and says it is secured through Microsoft 365 and complies with student privacy laws in the United States and Europe. That is the publisher's statement, not something we verified. Parents choosing between it and the regular app will also want Minecraft cross-platform play and Marketplace Pass for how purchases work outside school.
The download page labels the current Education release 1.26.32. Beyond that, no pricing for individual licences appears in the pages we read.
