Minecraft: Java Edition 26.1 and every later release, including 26.3, needs Java 25 or newer. The Minecraft Launcher bundles the Microsoft build of OpenJDK 25, so most players install nothing. You need your own Java for a server or for Fabric's setup file. Bedrock Edition does not use Java.
Which Java version each Minecraft release needs
The requirement moved up in steps. The last step came with 26.1 Snapshot 1, published by Mojang on 16 December 2025, whose technical changes read "The game now requires Java 25" and "The included Java distribution is now the Microsoft build of OpenJDK 25". Mojang's version feed, read on 11 October 2026, lists 26.3 (released 15 September 2026) as running on Java 25.
| Java Edition releases | Minimum Java |
|---|---|
| Pre-Classic rd-132211 to 1.5.2 | Java 5 |
| 1.6.1 (13w16a) to 1.11.2 | Java 6 |
| 1.12 (17w13a) to 1.16.5 | Java 8 |
| 1.17 (21w19a) to 1.17.1 | Java 16 |
| 1.18 (Pre-release 2) to 1.20.4 | Java 17 |
| 1.20.5 (24w14a) to 1.21.11 | Java 21 |
| 26.1 (from 26.1 Snapshot 1) onward, including 26.3 | Java 25 |
Note the numbering. Java Edition moved from 1.21.11 to 26.1 in March 2026, and the Java requirement changed in the same step. The newer scheme is covered in Latest Minecraft Version for Java and Bedrock.
What the Minecraft Launcher bundles
As of 26.1, the launcher ships with the Microsoft build of OpenJDK, Java SE 25. The Minecraft Wiki calls it the official, tested OpenJDK build for the game. If you need a different Java, the profile options menu lets you change it. The wiki adds a limit: when you point the launcher at a custom Java, it only accepts one whose primary Java version matches the minimum required to launch the game.
Fabric's documentation says the same from the other side: the launcher comes with its own Java installation, so a separate install only matters for Fabric's setup file or for the server file. Both of those run outside the launcher.
When you must install Java yourself
- You run a Java Edition server. The Minecraft Wiki says a server needs Java installed on the machine, because it does not use the launcher's bundled copy. See What a Minecraft Server Is and the Kinds You Can Join for the kinds of server.
- You set up Fabric with its setup file. Fabric's Windows guide covers Java 25 and says to run `java -version` first. See How to Install Fabric on Minecraft Java.
- You want a specific distribution. The wiki lists Adoptium's Eclipse Temurin, Azul's Zulu and Oracle's OpenJDK as alternatives to Microsoft's. It also warns that Oracle JDK carries licence terms that likely cover running a server.
The step-by-step part belongs to How to Update Java for Minecraft Java Edition. This page only tells you whether you need it.
Java for servers and mod loaders
For 26.3, the loaders' own feeds read on 11 October 2026 show Fabric and Quilt listing it as stable. NeoForge's newest 26.3 build is 26.3.0.71-beta, and every 26.3 build so far carries the beta label. Forge's latest is 66.0.10 with no recommended build marked. Paper lists builds for 26.3. A listed build is not proof that it works, and none of it was tested here. The sources we read do not state a Java requirement for Forge, NeoForge, Quilt or Paper themselves, so check each loader's own page before assuming Java 25.
If you play modded, the Java requirement follows the game version you pick. Staying on an older release means an older Java floor, as the table shows. Which Minecraft Java Version Suits Mods Right Now covers that choice, and How to Host a Modded Minecraft Server on Fabric or NeoForge covers the server side. Modrinth lists 7207 Fabric, 4030 NeoForge and 2115 Forge mods for 26.3, against 12810, 6641 and 3327 for 26.2 (Modrinth search API, read 11 October 2026, CurseForge not counted). So 26.3 mod coverage is still smaller.
How to check which Java version you have
Run `java -version` in a terminal. Fabric's guide warns that a result lower than 25 is too old for 26.1 and later. That check shows the Java on your system path, not the one inside the launcher. A launcher player can have an old system Java and still be fine.
What a wrong Java version looks like
The sources describe no exact error text. The Minecraft Wiki only says the game may crash without a reasonably modern Java, and that running an older release on newer Java can cause instability, especially for releases that need Java 8 or lower. Its examples are 1.16 on Java 17 and 1.18 on Java 20. If a crash follows a Java change, use the beginner troubleshooting checklist. Memory problems are a separate matter, covered in How to allocate more RAM to Minecraft.
