The right Minecraft Java version for mods is the newest one that every mod on your list already supports, and that is not always the newest release. Java Edition 26.3 is the current release, and Fabric lists it as stable. Check the Java mods we list against your loader before you pick.
| Edition | Current release | Released | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 26.3 | 2026-09-15 | Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 (feedback.minecraft.net) |
| Bedrock Edition (cannot load Java mods) | 26.50, Wilderness Bound | 2026-09-15 | Minecraft: Bedrock Edition 26.52 Hotfix Changelog (feedback.minecraft.net, 2026-09-25) |
These facts were read on 2026-10-06. Java Edition 26.4-snapshot-3, dated the same day, is a test build, not a release.
What makes a version good for mods
A mod runs only with the loader its build was made for, on the same Minecraft version. So three things decide it: whether your loader supports the version, whether your mods have a build for it, and whether their libraries do too. Version 26.3 runs on Java 25, which matters if you manage the runtime yourself.
Which versions each loader supports
| Loader | Status for 26.3 | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Listed as stable | From meta.fabricmc.net |
| Quilt | Listed as stable | From meta.quiltmc.org |
| NeoForge | Beta only | Newest build is 26.3.0.51-beta, and every 26.3 build carries the beta label |
| Forge | No recommended build | Latest build is 66.0.9, dated 2026-09-30 |
That is the main trade-off today. On 26.3, only Fabric and Quilt call their builds stable, while NeoForge labels all of its builds beta. The Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge comparison covers how the loaders differ.
How many mods list each version
| Game version | Fabric | NeoForge | Forge |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26.3 (released 2026-09-15) | 6579 | 3640 | 1816 |
| 26.2 (released 2026-06-16) | 12627 | 6548 | 3295 |
26.2 lists roughly twice as many Fabric mods as 26.3 does, and the same gap shows on NeoForge and Forge. The counts show only how many mods list a build, not how many work.
Newest version or an older one
Choose the newest release when your key mods list it and your loader is stable on it. Choose an older version when a mod you cannot do without has not caught up. Libraries show how varied this is. Resourceful Lib has builds listed for 26.3 on Fabric and NeoForge, while its Forge builds stopped at 1.20.4 and are marked STOPPED.

Content mods can stay behind. Deeper and Darker lists release builds up to 1.21.1 on Fabric, Quilt and NeoForge, and its Forge builds stopped at 1.20.1. Its Fabric alpha for 1.20.1 is newer than any of those release builds. Its page says the next update branch is planned initially for Fabric 1.20.1 and 1.21.1.

How to check a version before you commit
- List the three or four mods you care about most and look at each one's loader and version table.
- Check their required libraries, such as Fabric API, which must also have a build for that version.
- Confirm your loader supports the version, using the status table above.
The Fabric install guide and the Forge and NeoForge install guide cover setup. To move between versions, see how to change your Minecraft version.
What has not been announced
No stable NeoForge build for 26.3 and no recommended Forge build for 26.3 have been announced. No release date for the next Java release has been announced in the sources we read. See the latest Minecraft version and the next update for what Mojang has said.
