Better FPS Render Distance

Swaps the square render area for a stretchable 3D circular radius, so fewer chunk sections are drawn and frame rates rise. It runs on the player's own install only.

Better FPS Render Distance is a client-side mod for Fabric and NeoForge that reshapes Minecraft's render distance to cut the number of chunk sections drawn, which raises frame rates. Forge builds exist for older releases but have stopped. Only the player's own install needs it.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 26.1 to 26.3. The newest build requires Cupboard.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 26.3. The newest build requires Cupboard.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.16.5 to 1.20.1, builds stopped after September 2024. The newest build requires Cupboard; some builds for 1.16.5 to 1.19.4 need no dependencies.

What it changes

Vanilla Minecraft renders everything in a square radius, or a cylinder from 1.18 onward. This mod replaces that with a 3D circular radius that can be stretched horizontally and vertically, through the config file or the video options screen. The video options button is not available when OptiFine is installed.

The higher the vertical stretch, the fewer caves below you get rendered, especially distant ones. That is the trade-off. The mod's own figure is roughly 10 to 35 percent fewer chunk sections, which is where the frame rate gain comes from.

Settings

  • Horizontal render distance scaling.
  • Vertical render distance scaling.
  • A toggle for whether the adjusted distance also limits how far entities render.
  • A debug mode that displays the effect, useful for tuning the stretch values.

Installation

  1. 1.Install Fabric or NeoForge for your Minecraft release, following the Fabric guide or the Forge and NeoForge guide.
  2. 2.Get the mod file from its CurseForge page, which is the only place it is distributed. Newer builds also need the Cupboard library, so add that file too.
  3. 3.Put the files in your mods folder and launch with the loader's profile.

Putting the mod on a multiplayer host does nothing, so skip it there. General steps are in the mod installation guide.

Questions about Better FPS Render Distance.

4 questions

Do I need Better FPS Render Distance on a multiplayer host?

No. The mod is only required on the player's own install. It can be placed on the hosting side, but it does nothing there, so there is no reason to add it. Each player who wants the frame rate gain installs it for themselves.

Does Better FPS Render Distance work with Distant Horizons?

Yes, with a specific setup. The mod's own guidance for Distant Horizons is to set the vertical stretch to 100% and the horizontal stretch to 0%. Those scaling values are set through the config file or the video options screen, and the mod is only needed on the client side.

Is Forge still supported?

Not actively. Forge builds stopped in September 2024, while Fabric and NeoForge builds kept arriving. If you play on Forge, use the last build available for your release, and consider NeoForge or Fabric for newer ones.

Why do fewer caves show up below me?

A higher vertical stretch means fewer caves below you are rendered, especially distant ones. The trade-off is the mod's own figure of roughly 10 to 35 percent fewer chunk sections. Lower the vertical stretch in the config file or video options screen if missing caves bother you.
