Smooth Chunk Save is a server-side mod for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge that writes chunks to disk continuously instead of in bursts. That is the whole idea of a smooth chunk save mod: no lag spike when a pile of chunks saves at once. Single-player worlds count too, because they run an integrated server. Only the server needs it.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.18.1 to 26.3. The newest build requires Cupboard; some builds for 1.18.1 to 1.19.4 need no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 26.3. The newest build requires Cupboard.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.16.5 to 1.20.1. The newest build requires Cupboard; some builds for 1.16.5 to 1.19.4 need no dependencies.
What it changes
On a vanilla 1.18 server with three players, chunk saving takes about 11% of the server tick. With the mod it takes 0.3%. Depending on the setup, that can mean up to 10% more server-side performance.
It also repairs broken points of interest (POIs), which can cause villagers to behave erratically. Three options are exposed.
- The time interval after which a chunk is saved.
- How many chunks can be unloaded at once.
- Debug logging, which can be enabled.
Installation
- 1.Install the loader that matches your release. The guides for Fabric and Forge and NeoForge cover it.
- 2.Get the mod file from its CurseForge page, the only place it is distributed.
- 3.If your release needs Cupboard, get that library file as well.
- 4.Put both files in the mods folder of the server, or of your own install for single-player, then start with the loader's profile.
General steps for any mod are in the Java mod install guide. Players joining a dedicated server do not need the mod on their side.
Trade-offs
It changes when chunks save and repairs broken points of interest, and the creator lists no known incompatibilities with other mods. The gain depends on how much saving your server was doing before. A quiet world with few players will see little difference.
Questions about Smooth Chunk Save.
4 questions
Does Smooth Chunk Save work in single-player?
Yes. Single-player worlds run an integrated server, and this mod acts on the server side. Install it in your own mods folder with the matching loader and it applies to the world you open. No separate setup is described for single-player.
Do players need Smooth Chunk Save on a multiplayer server?
No. It is only required on the server side, whether integrated or dedicated. Players connecting to a dedicated server can join without the mod installed on their own side.
Does Smooth Chunk Save need Cupboard?
Newer releases on all three loaders require the Cupboard library, and it goes in the same mods folder as the mod. Some older Fabric and Forge releases need no dependency, so check the file you pick against its listed requirements.
What does Smooth Chunk Save actually do to lag?
It saves chunks gradually over time instead of many at once, which removes the spikes that come from bulk saving. For a vanilla 1.18 server with three players, chunk saving falls from about 11% of the server tick to 0.3% with the mod.
