Better Ping Display is a Fabric mod that shows each player's ping in the player list as a number. The default signal bars say little, and a figure in milliseconds says everything. It runs on the player's side only, so it works on vanilla servers.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.15.2 to 1.21.11. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What it changes

The mod adds one thing: each player's ping, shown as a number in the player list. With auto-color on, low latency shows green and high latency shows red, so a bad connection is visible at a glance.

Configuration

Settings live in `betterpingdisplay.json`. From mod release 1.2.0 a settings screen is also available if you install Mod Menu and YACL, both optional. The mod works normally without them. The options are:

  • autoColorPingText (on by default): colors the number by latency.
  • renderPingBars (off by default): also draws the standard ping bars.
  • pingTextColor (#A0A0A0 by default): the text color, used only when auto-color is off.
  • pingTextFormatString (%dms by default): the format of the text. It must contain %d, which is replaced by the live ping value.

Installation

  1. 1.Install Fabric for your Minecraft release, following the Fabric install guide.
  2. 2.Place the mod file in the mods folder of your game directory, as covered in the mod install guide.
  3. 3.Launch with the Fabric profile and open the player list to see the numbers.

Questions about Better Ping Display.

4 questions

Does Better Ping Display work on multiplayer servers?

Yes. It is a client-side mod, so the host does not need to install anything and it works even on vanilla servers. It only changes how the player list looks on your own screen. Installing it on a dedicated server is unsupported.

How do I change the color or format of the ping text?

Edit betterpingdisplay.json. Turn off autoColorPingText and set pingTextColor to a hex value, or change pingTextFormatString, which must keep a %d token where the number appears. With Mod Menu and YACL installed on release 1.2.0 or later, you can use a settings screen instead.

Can I keep the normal ping bars as well?

Yes. Set renderPingBars to true in the config file and the standard bars are drawn alongside the number. It is off by default, so only the numeric readout appears until you change it.

Does Better Ping Display need Fabric API?

No. The newest release lists no required dependencies. Mod Menu and YACL are optional and only add a settings screen. Without them, you configure the mod by editing the JSON file.
