Blur+ is a client-side Minecraft Java mod that adds a Gaussian blur shader to the background of every GUI, fading in rather than snapping on. It runs on Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt. If the world behind your inventory distracts you, or the stock blur feels dull, this is the fix.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.15 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API; some builds for 1.21 to 1.21.11 require Fabric API and MidnightLib; some builds for 1.15 to 1.21.1 need no dependencies; some builds for 1.20.5 to 1.20.6 require MidnightLib.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies; builds for 1.21 to 1.21.11 require MidnightLib.
- Quilt: Minecraft 1.18 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API; some builds for 1.21 to 1.21.11 require Fabric API and MidnightLib; some builds for 1.18 to 1.21.1 need no dependencies; some builds for 1.20.5 to 1.20.6 require MidnightLib.
What it changes
Every GUI background gets a blur shader that softens the view of the world behind it. The effect animates in rather than snapping on. The chat screen is excluded by default, since it does not cover the display.
- Gaussian blur with adjustable strength
- Fade-in animation with a configurable duration
- Two-colour gradient overlay with alpha
- An exclusion list for screens that should stay sharp
Configuration
The look is tuned through a handful of settings in the config file.
- radius sets blur strength. Lower it if performance suffers.
- fadeTime is the fade-in length in milliseconds.
- gradientStartColor and gradientEndColor use ARGB hex values. The default is black at 45% alpha (75000000).
- guiExclusions lists screen classes that skip the blur. Only chat is listed by default.
Installation
Install the loader that matches your Minecraft release, then place the mod file in the mods folder. Which libraries you need depends on the file you pick, as the list above shows. Some files want Fabric API, others MidnightLib. New to modding? Follow the Java mod install guide.
The mod must be on the client, and servers are unsupported, so there is nothing to add to a multiplayer host. The trade-off is that the right file depends on your loader and release, and if performance suffers you need to lower the radius setting.
Introducing Blur+
Questions about Blur+.
3 questions
Does Blur+ work on multiplayer servers?
Blur+ only changes how your own screen looks, so it is required on the client and is not supported on servers. You can use it while playing on a server that does not have it installed, since nothing needs to be added on the host side.
Does Blur+ work with shaders?
Yes, except with Optifine shaders, which currently clash with Blur+ because of an issue with Satin. The creator suggests using Canvas if you want shaders and the blur together.
How do I make the Blur+ effect weaker or faster?
Lower the radius setting to reduce blur strength, which also helps if you see performance problems. Change fadeTime to control how many milliseconds the blur takes to fade in. Colours are set with the gradient start and end values.
