Chunks Fade In

Chunks Fade In adds smooth fade-in and motion animations to loading chunks, plus an optional world curvature effect. It runs on the player's own install and needs Sodium.

Chunks Fade In is a chunks fade in mod for Java that replaces abrupt terrain pop-in with smooth fade and motion animations as chunks load, the way Bedrock does it and the way ChunkAnimator did. It ships for Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt and Forge. It is client side only, so it changes what you see and nothing about the world.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.18 to 26.3. The newest build requires Sodium, optionally Iris Shaders.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.3. The newest build requires Sodium, optionally Iris Shaders.
  • Quilt: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3. The newest build requires Sodium, optionally Iris Shaders.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.20 to 1.20.1. The newest build requires Sodium, optionally Iris Shaders.

What it changes

Distant terrain no longer appears right in front of you. Chunks fade in instead. The mod also adds curvature, which curves the world as if it were a spherical planet.

The mod works with Sodium and, in the creator's words, mostly with Iris and Distant Horizons, so expect small rough edges when shaders or distant terrain are active.

Installing it

  1. 1.Install the loader that matches your Minecraft release, using the guide for Fabric or Forge and NeoForge.
  2. 2.Add the matching Sodium file.
  3. 3.Drop the Chunks Fade In file into the mods folder and launch the loader profile.

Trade-offs

The mod is client only and servers are unsupported, so it cannot add the effect for other players. The Sodium requirement rules out OptiFine setups. The idea came from the abandoned Fade In Chunks mod, though kerudion states no code was taken from it.

Questions about Chunks Fade In.

4 questions

Does Chunks Fade In work without Sodium?

No. Every current release lists Sodium as required, and the creator states that vanilla rendering and OptiFine are not supported. The exact Sodium release depends on your Minecraft release, so check the file you download for the exact requirement.

Can I use Chunks Fade In on a multiplayer server?

Install it on your own client only. The mod is listed as client required and server unsupported, so putting it on a server does nothing useful. Because it only affects how your own screen draws chunks, it does not change the world for other players.

Does Chunks Fade In work with shaders?

Iris is listed as an optional companion, and the creator says the mod works mostly with it. Expect it to run alongside shader packs, though some combinations may show small visual glitches. Distant Horizons gets the same description of mostly working.

Which loaders does Chunks Fade In support?

It has releases for Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt and Forge. Pick the file that matches both your loader and your Minecraft release.
