CraterLib is a library mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, written by hypherionsa for the mods of First Dark Development and HypherionSA. It holds shared code and platform helpers that make porting across loaders easier. It is optional on either side, and you only need it when another mod lists it as a requirement.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric and Quilt: Minecraft 1.18.2 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.18.2 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
What the library provides
- A universal, TOML-based config system.
- Helper classes for assorted Java game features.
- Cross-loader events, based on Acara.
- Cross-loader config screens, based on Cloth Config Lite, with automatic registration for Mod Menu and the (Neo)Forge config screen.
- A built-in cross-loader network system.
- A modding API for writing mods that are independent of loader and release.
Support status of older lines
The README treats the 1.21.x line as actively supported, with every bug fix and feature landing there first. 1.18.2, 1.19.2 and 1.20/1.20.1 are long-term support and receive backports only. 1.19.4, 1.20.4 and 1.20.6 are marked as no longer supported, with no fixes or new features. If a mod you use targets one of those older lines, expect slower updates to the library.
Installation
Install the loader your other mod uses, matching the same release number, as covered in how to install mods on Java. Then place the CraterLib file in the mods folder next to the mod that depends on it and launch with the loader's profile. Mods are Java only and will not load on Bedrock.
Bugs and suggestions go to the GitHub issue tracker. The author also runs a Discord for quicker support. The README says a wiki is coming, but none exists yet.
Questions about CraterLib.
3 questions
What is CraterLib used for?
CraterLib is a library mod holding code shared across the mods of First Dark Development and HypherionSA. It supplies a config system, events, networking and platform helpers so one codebase can support several loaders. Other developers may use it, but it is designed first for the author's own projects.
Does CraterLib add anything on its own?
No. The author states that it does nothing without a module, meaning a mod that relies on it. If you installed it without a dependent mod, you will see no change in play. You only need it when another mod's requirements list CraterLib.
How do I install CraterLib?
Pick the file for your loader (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt) and your release number, then put it in the mods folder beside the mod that needs it. Launch with that loader's profile. A file built for one loader will not run on another.
