Deeper and Darker is a vanilla-plus exploration mod that builds on Minecraft's Deep Dark. It adds sculk-themed blocks, Warden tools and armor, new mobs, and a full hidden dimension called the Otherside that you reach through a portal in the Ancient City. It runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt across Minecraft 1.19.2 through 1.21.1, and is needed on both the client and the server.
What Deeper and Darker adds
The mod keeps the eerie tone of the vanilla Deep Dark while giving it a progression path. Sculk materials become craftable building blocks, the Warden drops materials for a new tool and armor set, and the Ancient City gains a purpose beyond loot: it is the gateway to a separate dimension.
- New blocks including sculk stone, gloomslate, and sculk grime.
- Warden-themed tools and an armor set crafted from Deep Dark drops.
- The sculk transmitter and other utility items.
- A new dimension, the Otherside, with three distinct biomes.
- New mobs such as Phantoms and sculk creatures that inhabit the Otherside.
Reaching the Otherside dimension
The Otherside is entered from a portal inside an Ancient City in the Deep Dark. Once activated, it drops you below the bedrock into echoing forests, cliffs, and deep caverns. The biomes are dark by design, so bring light sources and watch for the mobs that spawn there.

Questions about this entry.
How do I install Deeper and Darker?
Install a supported loader first: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt. Download the Deeper and Darker file that matches your loader and Minecraft version from the Modrinth page, then drop the JAR into your mods folder. For multiplayer, add the same file to the server's mods folder so the client and server stay in sync.
Does Deeper and Darker work with Fabric and Forge?
Yes. The mod publishes builds for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt. Pick the file that matches both your loader and your Minecraft version, since each release is built per loader. There is no separate edition for each one beyond choosing the correct download.
How do you get to the Otherside dimension?
Find an Ancient City in the Deep Dark and locate its portal frame. Activating that portal sends you to the Otherside, a dimension below the bedrock with echoing forests, cliffs, and caverns. It is dark and hostile, so bring light, food, and gear before you travel through.
Which Minecraft version does Deeper and Darker support?
The project covers Minecraft 1.19.2 through 1.21.1, including 1.20.1 and 1.20.4. Not every patch release has a build, so check the Modrinth page for the exact version you run and download the matching file. Files are not cross-compatible between versions.
Does Deeper and Darker work on multiplayer servers?
Yes, but it must be installed on both the server and every client that connects. Because it adds blocks, mobs, and a new dimension, a client without the mod cannot join a server running it. Install the same loader and mod version on both sides.
