Deeper and Darker

Deeper and Darker is a Java Edition mod that turns the Deep Dark from a place you sneak through into a place you go on purpose. Kill the Warden, take the heart it drops, and light the reinforced deepslate portal that sits at the center of every ancient city. Behind it is the Otherside, a separate dimension with four biomes, its own ores, eight new mobs, and four enchantments you will not find in vanilla. It runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt across Minecraft 1.19.2 to 1.21.1, and it has to be installed on the client and the server.

What Deeper and Darker adds

The mod keeps the eerie tone of the vanilla Deep Dark and gives it a progression path. Sculk materials become craftable building blocks, the Warden's drop feeds a smithing table upgrade into Warden tools and armor, and the ancient city stops being a loot run and becomes a doorway. Most of the new content sits on the far side of that portal, so there is not much to see until you commit to the Warden fight.

• Over a hundred new blocks, including sculk stone, gloomslate, and a new wood type from the Otherside's echo trees.
• Four Otherside biomes: the deeplands, the echoing forest, the overcast columns, and the blooming caverns.
• Warden tools and armor, upgraded from netherite gear with a reinforced echo shard and a warden upgrade smithing template.
• The sculk transmitter, a rare chest-loot item that links to a container or workstation and opens its interface remotely.
• The ancient temple, a three-level structure in the deeplands with enchanted books, echo shards, diamond gear, and a hidden basement.
• Eight new mobs including a miniboss, plus sculk stone versions of every overworld ore that drop double the resources and experience.

Reaching the Otherside dimension

Every ancient city generates an unlit portal at its center, built from reinforced deepslate in the same shape as a nether portal. The key is the heart of the deep, which the Warden always drops, and you use it on the frame the way flint and steel lights obsidian. On Forge builds you have to clear the sculk veins off the inner frame first or it will not ignite. Once you are through, survival players carry a permanent darkness effect unless they wear the warden helmet, there is no day cycle or weather, and beds explode. If you would rather have more underground to explore without leaving the overworld, Alex's Caves adds themed cave biomes instead of a new dimension.

Enchantments Deeper and Darker adds

Deeper and Darker adds four enchantments of its own. Two go on a sword or an axe, two tune the sonorous staff (the sonic boom weapon crafted from a sculk bone, a soul crystal, and a heart of the deep), and only one of the four ever turns up at a normal enchanting table.

• Sculk Smite raises attack damage against sculk mobs such as Shattered and the Warden. It is the one you can reach through an enchanting table, and it also comes from villager trades, mob-dropped weapons, and enchanted weapons in loot chests.
• Catalysis makes the mobs you kill spread sculk, the way a sculk catalyst does. It comes only from villager trades and ancient temple basement chests, and it does not work on baby mobs.
• Volume increases the maximum damage of the sonorous staff. Villager trades only.
• Reverberation increases the maximum range of the same sonic blast. Villager trades only.

Volume and Reverberation arrived with version 1.4, which so far ships only as a NeoForge build for 1.21.1. The Fabric, Forge, and Quilt files are still on the 1.3.3 line, where Sculk Smite and Catalysis are the only two.

Java Edition only, no Bedrock version

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are separate builds of Minecraft, and a Java mod file never runs on Bedrock. Deeper and Darker publishes Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt files only, and all four are Java mod loaders, so there is no Bedrock or Pocket Edition version of this mod. Bedrock and MCPE players need something built for their own edition, which is where our Bedrock addons section starts.

Installation

1. 1.Install your chosen loader for a supported Minecraft version. Our walkthroughs cover installing Fabric and installing Forge or NeoForge.
2. 2.Download the Deeper and Darker file that matches your loader and version from the Modrinth project page.
3. 3.Place the JAR in your .minecraft/mods folder, and in the server mods folder for multiplayer. If you are not sure where that folder lives, our guide to installing Minecraft mods on Java walks through it.
4. 4.Launch the matching loader profile and create or load a world to start exploring the Deep Dark.

Loaders and supported versions

• Fabric and Quilt have the widest coverage, 1.19.2 through 1.21.1, on the 1.3.3 release line.
• NeoForge files exist for 1.21 and 1.21.1 only, and 1.21.1 is where the newest release, 1.4.1, sits.
• Forge stops at 1.20.1. Its last release was 1.3.3 in November 2024, so Forge players do not get the 1.4 content.
• Required on both the client and the server. Match the file to your exact Minecraft version and loader, because cross-version files will not load.
• A 2.0.0s alpha for Fabric 1.20.1 also sits on the project page. It is an early test build of the next branch, not the stable release.
