Dynamic Lights

Dynamic Lights makes torches, lanterns, and other glowing items cast real light in Minecraft Java the moment they're held, dropped, or carried by a mob, no shader pack required. It runs as a Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, or Forge mod, with a matching datapack build for servers that skip mod loaders.

Dynamic Lights makes torches, lanterns, and other glowing items throw real light the moment you pick them up, whether you're holding one, it's sitting on the ground, or a mob is carrying it. Tschipcraft built it to calculate lighting server-side, so it ships as a Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, or Forge mod, plus a standalone datapack for servers that skip mod loaders entirely. Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, and the datapack track the current Minecraft version; Forge lags behind, and that split matters before you install.

Held and dropped items light up without placing a torch

Vanilla Minecraft only lights up a torch once it's placed as a block. Carry it in your hand, drop it mid-fight, or watch a zombie pick one off the ground, and the light disappears. Dynamic Lights keeps any entity or item with a defined light level glowing instead, so a held torch lights the wall beside you and a dropped one stays visible in the dark.

  • Held torches, lanterns, soul lanterns, and jack o'lanterns light up in your hand.
  • Dropped light-emitting items keep glowing on the ground instead of going dark.
  • Mobs and other players carrying a light source illuminate the area around them.
  • Burning entities, glow squids, and other vanilla glow sources are covered too.
  • Modded light-emitting items work automatically as long as they have a defined light level.

Installing Dynamic Lights and its dependencies

Fabric and Quilt installs need Fabric API (or Quilted Fabric API / Quilt Standard Libraries on pure Quilt) as a required dependency; the mod will not load without it. Mod Menu and MidnightLib are optional and only add an in-game settings screen for adjusting which entities and items emit light.

  1. 1.Install Fabric Loader, Quilt Loader, Forge, or NeoForge for your target Minecraft version.
  2. 2.Install Fabric API, or Quilted Fabric API / QSL if you're running plain Quilt.
  3. 3.Download the Dynamic Lights build for your loader from the Modrinth project page.
  4. 4.Add Mod Menu and MidnightLib if you want the in-game settings screen (optional).
  5. 5.Place the matching build in your server's mods folder, since Dynamic Lights must run there to work.

Server requirement and the datapack build

Dynamic Lights computes lighting server-side rather than as a client-only rendering trick, so the mod (or its datapack twin) has to be installed on the server you're playing on, not just your own game. That's what lets every connected player see the glow without installing anything themselves, but it also means you can't add the effect to a server you don't administer. Tschipcraft ships a matching datapack build, versioned alongside the mod releases, for admins who cannot or would rather not run a mod loader.

Questions about Dynamic Lights.

5 questions

How do I install Dynamic Lights?

Install Fabric Loader, Quilt Loader, Forge, or NeoForge for your Minecraft version, add Fabric API (or Quilted Fabric API on plain Quilt) as a required dependency, then drop the matching Dynamic Lights build into the mods folder. Because it runs server-side, it needs to go in the server's mods folder too, not only your own client.

Does Dynamic Lights work with Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt?

Yes, all four are supported, plus a standalone datapack for vanilla servers. Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, and the datapack currently reach Minecraft 26.2, but the newest Forge build only reaches 1.21.5, so Forge players on a newer version need to wait for an update or switch loaders.

Do I need to install Dynamic Lights on the server, not just my own game?

Yes. Dynamic Lights calculates lighting server-side rather than as a client-side visual trick, so the mod or its datapack build has to run on the server for the effect to appear at all. Installing it only on your own client does nothing on a server you don't control.

Is there a datapack version of Dynamic Lights?

Yes. Tschipcraft publishes a standalone datapack release alongside every mod version, aimed at server admins who cannot or don't want to run a Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt mod loader. It delivers the same held, dropped, and mob-carried lighting behavior.

Which Minecraft version does Dynamic Lights support?

The project spans 1.17 through the current 26.2 release, but support splits by loader. Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, and the datapack build track the current version, while the newest Forge release stops at 1.21.5. Check the Modrinth version list for your specific loader before downloading.
